Made a London pattern handle in rowan for an old chisel found at a flea market. Made without a lathe, because remember kids; using the proper tool for the job is cheating!

It is a bit wonky, but I am still rather pleased with the result.

@jorny

Nice work.

Any tool that gets the job done is adequately proper. Hand tools even more so.

@wedge

Hand tools are nice, because the better you get with them the freer you become!

@jorny It looks really good TBH. can't even tell you didn't use lathe.

@Rajiv

I did do one latheish thing, when drilling for the tang, I left the handle on the drill and let it spin to be able to quickly sand the round grip closest to the bolster.

@jorny 👍 I like it a lot and if it works, it works.

@jorny Impressive regularity in the hexagon if done without lathe.

Jokes aside, it looks great! I'd love to make that kind of handle too.

@karl

Thanks! Planed it square(-ish) in section first, marked out the diameter with a compass and then planed of the corners to make it octagonal. Then shaped with a knife and cleaned up with files and sandpaper.

You should give it a try!

I like OldHand’s unplugged London pattern handle build. Does a good job of showing the process and progression. The handle part starts at 21:25.

Interesting! He uses a jig and a chisel to form it. I did it with a slöjd knife holding it with my hands.
