@Em0nM4stodon if that happens and is coupled with laws requiring ID for the purchase of the phone/contract, we are looking at outright totalitarianism in tech.

At least in Italy (but I'm quite confident it is the same all over Europe) we need and always needed to give our ID to buy any SIM card/ phone subscription. There's no such thing as a burner phone.

@nicolaottomano @dckim @Em0nM4stodon Pre-paid sim card ID verification was introduced in Austria in 2019. Before 2019 one could buy burner phones and cards with cash at grocery stores. There was no noticable public debate or resistance despite the burocracy and problems for existing contracts like emergency systems which were just turned off overnight.
