2) While the“Follow the money” phrase was a creation of William Goldman, scriptwriter for “All The President’s Men”(strongly recommended - preview 👇)
Mark Felt’s advice should resonate to all those who care about western #democracy, what ails it and the return of #fascism

3) Western democracies are threatened by an onslaught of money from #UltraWealthy types.
Money is being spent to achieve state capture and the numbers while large to normal folk, are minute compared to the prize
#ReformUK is a good example of this type of corruption and is the focus of #TheRestIsPolitics. Give this episode a listen -the first in a four part series

4) #Corruption is not diminished because it occurs in plain sight.
Whether it is the attempt to bilk taxpayers of $1.776 billion for a slush fund for #Jan6 rioters, the suppression of income audits by the IRS, or the the sweetheart deal for Jr. 👇
All are corrupt and are fodder for the #Midterms.

5) There is something sadly sweet and naive about #ScottPelley’s interview with LGN 👇
The landscape in #NewsMedia has shifted and fidelity to the truth is being replaced by #billionaire “truths” dictated by #oligarchs
Connecting the dots, it seems, gov takeover approval of CBS News parent Paramount was conditioned on the destruction of #SixtyMinutes

6) #AI is too important to be controlled by autocrats or oligarchs
#RutgerBregman lays out the danger of #AIDenialism and the threat posed to global stability by unregulated AI
The machines cannot be be smashed, the clock cannot be rolled back as autocrats and oligarchs in other geographies will seize a sinister advantage which will destabilize the economies of rival countries

@mnutty This is like the US saying "we have to win at AI or else China will dominate", but instead of the US it's the masses, and instead of China it's the oligarchs.
Unfortunately I think the oligarchs and the techno-fascists have such a stranglehold that a sledgehammer approach seems preferable to me. I think Rutger is the one in denial.
Even our supposedly centre-left government here in Australia is rolling out the red carpet to the US tech lords, begging them to build life-sucking data centres here.
If we want to take control of AI we need some sort of revolution, or maybe a general crash/civilisational collapse. Governments generally are intrinsically predisposed to roll over for big business, including big tech and other big emitters.
The point that Rutger is making is that government needs to take control of #AI.
@mnutty Having read his book (Humankind) and listened to his Reith lecture I feel nervous about disputing Rutger's arguments. But he just seems to be all over the shop here. The "denial" he talks about is countered by the screamingly loud warnings about Skynet and singularities we are constantly hearing. I don't like his click-baity heading either. It's cheap and I would expect better of him.
Also I read "Overshoot" by William Catton around the same time as "Humankind". Technology is a double or nothing bet, and I DO think we need less of it. Datacentres he wants in Europe are a nightmare. All that water, electricity, the huge diesel tanks burning and emitting CO2.
Yes I am team sledgehammer, Rutger doesn't convince me.
I can’t argue with any of your concerns. That are entirely legitimate and are why we real governance is needed in this space. #AISafety should concern everyone.
I have a sneaking suspicion that we’re likely to overbuild #datacenters. I’m old enough to remember the fiber optic buildout and subsequent crash
The job with #AI is now rigorous containmen and public ownership. We need to get in front of this thing and harness it for the betterment of all rather than the few
