@syphdias they sell one-time licenses (which I have purchased for Immich) for a software product that requires constant code maintenance. This isn't sustainable in the long run.
See Sonos, who sell very nice devices for a one-time sale with the promise of continuing cloud service operation and firmware maintenance.
No matter if open or closed source, this kind of business model always ends up in an enshittification route that tries to extract subscription fees from a captive user base. That's what I'm worried about.
