I know this is an ask, but I want a desktop environment that I can configure easily using just text.

I want

  • Wayland
  • Floating Windows
  • Window Decorations
  • Quake Terminal (drops down when you hit a key, goes back up)
  • Basically, Windows 7 Desktop but with a dropdown terminal
  • Honestly it'd be cool if I could have Aero

Anyone able to point at somthing that's not Gnome or KDE?

@krutonium

You might want to try Cinnamon. But I think the experience will be better to use Plasma and tweak it to your needs.

@patbru Plasma's configuration irritates me :\

I want somthing I can set up and then migrate that configuration to Nix and just be done with it, you know?

I've been thinking about maybe building out a desktop by using Hyprland as a base?

@krutonium @patbru uhh i dont think hyprland would be a great idea, seeing the kind of people that support the project. there are many other compositors available nowadays, like niri, river, mangowc , etc

hook it up with some quickshell thing, kitty can be a dropdown term, and there ya have it

idk about window decorations tho, niri does not support them but others definitely do. also while all of thesr are tiling, they all support floating windows. well river isnt either, but you can choose a window manager for it that does floating.

also there is labwc, which is probably your best bet for building up an actual DE the way youd want it . its a very solid building block, and its floating by default

@fiore @patbru Noted on the Hyprland bit! Wasn't aware. As for the rest of it... Going into the notepad.
@krutonium @patbru honestly labwc is my big recommendation out of these ones. its very solid
