@randahl as someone also living in the Netherlands, I'm extremely relieved about this. There isn't a lot of critical thinking in this country about things like this, so I had already thought this was a lost case.

In a way, Trump and his cronies are doing us an indirect favor. If it had been ~5 more years of blindly trusting big tech and the US, a lot of things would have been irreversible. But they are fucking up so many things so quickly that it is hard to deny risks like this

I would have thought it would not have taken any discussion to finally decide this as it seems so obvious.

But it took government more than a month with the initial idea to simply go ahead. They did not want to interfere in the free market (...).

And by the way there are still a lot of other dependencies here in the Netherlands...

Digital Citizenship should not be in the hands of companies that can be sold at all. Either owned by the public/state or by a non-profit public good legal entity (for even more independence).

Het probleem is dat de VS wetgeving heeft waarmee de autoriteiten bedrijven die in de VS zijn gevestigd, kan dwingen gevoelige privéinformatie aan hen vrij te geven, of essentiële diensten te blokkeren door sancties op te leggen.

En de regering-Trump heeft laten zien er niet vies van te zijn om daar gebruik (of misbruik) van te maken, als het ze uitkomt.

Dus kun je Amerikaanse bedrijven niet vertrouwen met het beheer van dit soort diensten.
