What'sApp is supposedly E2EE (although I think they just settled a case that alleged they could read your messages, so that's fun), but they collect metadata, which allows them to paint a rather broad picture of who you're talking to and when you're talking to them.

@BoredBakon Meta is not a trustworthy company. And claims of theirs that have not been firmly verified by disinterested expert sources are not to be trusted. And even then, might not still be true TOMORROW. If the stakes are high, just stay away from them.

@bjmendelson I would never tell people to use WhatsApp. But I would tell people they can *also* use Signal, *even if* for whatever (misguided) reason they can't leave WhatsApp.

@MishaVelthuis @bjmendelson this is right. I only use signal, but asking people to make that leap in one go will result in a lot of resistance.

Good for people to be able to try signal and find out how good it is, at least have some secure conversations and maybe eventually delete WhatsApp later.

@Mannanan Well that's the other thing. Session is better, sure. But. In having trained people hands on, I can tell you Signal is a lot easier for them to use. So that's the one I tell people to START with, not end with.
