Telling people to use WhatsApp over Signal, or in conjunction with Signal, is stupid.

PLEASE do not use ANYTHING owned by Meta for resistance work.

I promise you, whatever excuse or reason you're thinking of does NOT matter. You are not safe using Meta products. Period.

@bjmendelson

What'sApp is supposedly E2EE (although I think they just settled a case that alleged they could read your messages, so that's fun), but they collect metadata, which allows them to paint a rather broad picture of who you're talking to and when you're talking to them.

@BoredBakon @bjmendelson
I think it's e2ee against third parties but scanned by Metas Ai.
@MostlyTato @bjmendelson
I'd rather a human read my messages than have them fed into the basalisk
@BoredBakon Meta is not a trustworthy company. And claims of theirs that have not been firmly verified by disinterested expert sources are not to be trusted. And even then, might not still be true TOMORROW. If the stakes are high, just stay away from them.

@bjmendelson I would never tell people to use WhatsApp. But I would tell people they can *also* use Signal, *even if* for whatever (misguided) reason they can't leave WhatsApp.

@MishaVelthuis @bjmendelson this is right. I only use signal, but asking people to make that leap in one go will result in a lot of resistance.

Good for people to be able to try signal and find out how good it is, at least have some secure conversations and maybe eventually delete WhatsApp later.

@bjmendelson I see more people trying people to switch to Telegram rather than to Signal. Draw for conclusions.

@bjmendelson

You couldn't pay me to trust Signal, either.

@Mannanan Well that's the other thing. Session is better, sure. But. In having trained people hands on, I can tell you Signal is a lot easier for them to use. So that's the one I tell people to START with, not end with.
@bjmendelson @Mannanan what about Matrix/Element? Is Session really the golden standard?
@bjmendelson i wish signal would stop forcing updates, that makes whatsapp tempting
@condret @bjmendelson u need updates if u want security. What a stupid sentence?
@anonleftist @bjmendelson my device, i decide when to install updates, not signal

@condret @bjmendelson just another stupid sentence.

Don't cry here if you get hacked or something.

U either get the latest updates or u don't use tech in 2026.

The most bigoted shit that I heard until today.

You're simply talking like an average digdeeper reader.

@condret Okay, but you know the point of it is security, right? Which CONSTANTLY needs to be updated if you want it. If you want a secure comms app, then you also need constant security updates for it. I thought most people knew that.

This is how the Nazis screwed up, too. Enigma was pretty secure, but some field officers didn't feel like updating initial codes regularly, which made messages easier for Allies to crack.

If you want security, you must accept regular updates.

Your choice.

@wesdym i don't want corpo spying on me. i don't want all of my chats to be analysed for more ad personalization. i don't want to be victim of state mass surveillance. i want e2e. i don't need perfect security. I'm not really concerned about hackers pwning my device.
i*m concerned about those, who are legally allowed to intercept my messages.

besides that, there is now way that an update that fixes 1 vuln, doesn't introduce another one. updates do not indicate security.
@condret I wish you could hear what you sound like.
@bjmendelson @delta is an awesome alternative.
No registration, decentralized, based on existing protocols.
Easy to install, to connect and to use on multiple devices.
@bjmendelson did whatsapp stop automatically downloading your contacts address book or?
