HERE IS ONE SOLUTION TO CUT IT OFF:

#DeGoogle phones: https://tuta.com/blog/degoogled-phones

@Tutanota Kinda strange that we need academic studies, for human-made, well-defined processes. Google fully knows when and what their code does. We need to experiment with it to find out.
@Tutanota Those settings wouldn't do much anyways. It might make a it bit more if at all.

BREAKING: YOUR PHONE IS SENDING DATA TO GOOGLE EVERY 4.5 MINUTES. SCREEN OFF. PHONE UNTOUCHED. TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN CONFIRMED IT IN A PEER REVIEWED STUDY. HERE ARE 10 SETTINGS TO CUT IT OFF:

X (formerly Twitter)

@indonische @Tutanota that account seems to post AI generated content, Claude "tips and tricks", and (according to community notes) reposts other people's threads but in all caps. in that case, looks like they're copying this thread: https://xcancel.com/hasantoxr/status/2045522876925919531

and this is the BREAKING study from 2021 https://www.scss.tcd.ie/doug.leith/apple_google.pdf

@noodlejetski @Tutanota

thanks for the elaboration, I'm just dissatisfied tuta to put the snapshot but not include the real link I need to spend few secs to browser.

@indonische @noodlejetski Exactly. Screenshotting this tweet without linking it and without providing any context about it makes @Tutanota look clickbaity.
@katzentratschen @indonische @noodlejetski @Tutanota I for one am totally okay with not linking to X ;-)
@BartV @indonische @noodlejetski @Tutanota That's how misinformation is spread. Either link your sources properly or look for different sources.
@katzentratschen @indonische @noodlejetski @Tutanota true. Not sharing the shit that’s posted on X would be even better!
The link is in the post!
@Tutanota throw away your television
@Tutanota The easiest way is to also delete everything with Canta, yes even GMS
@Kurosetii @Tutanota some phone might stuck into bootloop
@GOKUSHRM @Tutanota I haven't had any bootloop issues, at least not on POCO device
@Kurosetii @Tutanota have you deleted Google play service app?. Try that
@Kurosetii @Tutanota let us know what happened.
@GOKUSHRM @Tutanota I will, but in case of bootloop I can try netguard so it blocks Google Play Services from using the internet so it doesn't run in the background and send data
@Kurosetii @Tutanota I'm already using it and cut all the internet option for GPS... I also disabled GPS but thn some apps won't work properly.
@Kurosetii @Tutanota but I want to delete it permanently & whenever I tried my phone stuck in bootloop & thn factory reset
@GOKUSHRM @Tutanota update: I uninstalled google play services and reboot the phone and caused no bootloop (POCO M3 PRO 5G)
@Kurosetii @Tutanota ur bootloader unlocked?. U are lucky.. I trued r3 times to delete GPS but stuck in bootloop and factory reset ☹️.. Rog 3 phone
@GOKUSHRM @Tutanota my bootloader is not unlocked, but i noticed something, in my certification everything is in Chinese, but since I'm from the EU I should have an European Certification
@Kurosetii @Tutanota good.. I'm still looking a way to delete GPS without breaking my phone 😅.
@GOKUSHRM @Tutanota Can you unlock the bootloader? If you can, try changing ROM
@Kurosetii @Tutanota asus removed unlocking tool from official website... I want to change custom rom. Google is forcing every single company to block bootloader 😡

Mundo Geek
@GOKUSHRM @Tutanota In truth the bootloader unlocking is decided by the phone manufacturer, for example I am still lucky enough to have the old bootloader unlocking on MIUI 14 that you go to the site, download the tool and wait 7 days, Xiaomi changed It now and you need reach lvl 3 in their community which its pretty difficult
@Kurosetii I'm actually thinking to buy blackberry key2. New phones are useless in terms of useless apps & gimmicky specs.. Increasing price yearly. Useless
@Tutanota
@Kurosetii @Tutanota maybe due to Chinese version of rom

@Tutanota The one and only true solution is:

Sell your Google phone if it isn’t a Pixel. Then get yourself a Google Pixel phone. Install #grapheneos and configure it. Live happily ever after with a lot more security and privacy …

You’re welcome. 😃

@AndyGER @Tutanota There are other options. Fairphone with e/OS, a Linux-based OS, or LineageOS. Other phones with Lineage, too. grapheneOS is the most secure android solution, but if you can get a Linux phone thats just as good.

Also reminder that Motorola is partnering with gOS, so that'll become an option too.

@zambezi @Tutanota The point is the grade of security and privacy, which you can’t achieve with these options, I have learned. But you’ll get away from Google more I suppose …
@zambezi @AndyGER @Tutanota If you want to deGoogle, /e/ OS is not really an option, as they do include Google services as privileged by default: https://eylenburg.github.io/android_comparison.htm

@Tutanota

regarding fairphone. i am annoyed that my perfectly working fair phone 3 reaches EOL soon and therefore e/os also drops support the next year.

i haven't ever replaced anything because nothing did break. so the reason to throw away the phone in near future is solely software and lacking security updates

@utf_7 @Tutanota you could try lineageOS.

Unlike the official Fairphone firmware, which ends support in August 2026, LineageOS updates depend entirely on the voluntary work of the community maintainer, currently teamb58.

Support typically ends only if the maintainer stops updating the device or if hardware limitations prevent porting newer Android versions. Given the device's popularity in the custom ROM community, support is expected to continue well beyond the official August 2026 cutoff.

@Tutanota

Please explain why firefox is recommended as a privacy respecting browser along side LibreWolf.

Without a settings marathon Firefox does not respect user privacy.

LibreWolf has done a good job in regard to stopping Telemetry and such extras as app normandy and merino. Merino refers to fleecing users, Normandy to invasive practices.

Settings to avoid some Android passive data tracking

*** 1/ WiFi Scanning You turned WiFi off. Android kept it scanning. Google tracks your location through nearby networks even when the toggle is off. Settings > Location > Location Services > WiFi Scanning > Off. Samsung adds an extra step under Improve Accuracy. *** 2/ Bluetooth Scanning Same situation. Samsung's own settings page says it plainly: connects to nearby devices even while Bluetooth is turned off. Settings > Location > Location Services > Bluetooth Scanning > Off. *** 3/ Delete Your Advertising…

@Tutanota This is a comment on the page you're linking to and not the image you attached.

There is a huge difference between de-Googling your general web use and your phone though, which I think needs more attention. I can't pay my bills or use a credit card for online purchases without a phone anymore, sadly. So the only option I have if I want to properly de-Google my phone is to switch to iOS. I'm not prepared to do that (yet) since I feel I'll just switch from one evil to another. So therefore I'm currently using GrapheneOS since that at least limits my exposure to Google somewhat while still working with the requirements ALL banks in my country set in regards to identification. These are the only possible alternatives for A LOT of people. And the EU do not seem to care to do something about that whatsoever, they rather seem to work towards making us all even more locked in to iOS and Google Play Services.

microG is a small and shaky bandaid that solidifies your dependency of Google way more than GrapheneOS in itself does with a one-time purchase of hardware (how you even can call the use of microG 'de-Googling' is baffling to me), and only works with banking apps in a _very few_ select countries, for now. For a lot of countries it's a complete non-starter.

I'm sorry, but you need to do more research for these "guides", or specifically mention that you're only targeting your German audience, where I guess things work differently?

If you want to properly deGoogle your phone, you need to use iOS. That's already the reality in plenty of European countries today. And it sucks. We're not doing anyone any favours pretending any of these other ones are a truly viable solution _if deGoogling is your actual goal_. They COULD BE one day, provided that the EU starts caring and thinking about the right things. So _that's_ where we should focus our energy, and stop pretending.

@seq @Tutanota and whats the point to switch from google to apple? nothing...same sh*t
@Tutanota start using keypad phone 😅
@Tutanota ¿Y si solo dispones de 200€ o 300€ para gastar en un dispositivo móvil, cual sería la mejor opción? Esos teléfonos son inaccesibles para millones de personas por su alto precio
@Tutanota Nowadays, I think it's a matter of will, not a matter of how. Most people don't want to give up comfort.
There's different ways to DeGoogle your life. Tuta says this is ONE solution. They didn't make any claim that it is THE solution! - Everybody has their own comfort level and how they need or want to use their phone or on the net. I had no issue with the article or complaint about it. I think they did a good job detailing some different options that are available out there.
Tuta even cancelled my email with them for no reason. Even at that I'm not bitter towards them, but I wish they were at least fair.

@Tutanota Does it really matter at this point?

If your phone has been sending google data every 4.5 mins for years all switching it off is gonna do is save google a few mb's.....they already know you and switching it off is just another data point for them to better fuck you in the next update.

@Tutanota not mine ^_____^
I've been running Ubuntu Touch for the last ten years (since bq E5)
@Tutanota "water is wet" type news headline
@Tutanota - Could not find the 10 settings only one stinking Commercial.
@Tutanota On my local network the worst offenders are iPhones. Whenever someone hooks one onto the wifi the tracking etc traffic is nearly constant.
@Tutanota
Are there any a bit smaller degoogled phones? Below 6"?
@Tutanota
Apple laptops do something similar to this too. My work laptop is a Mac, unfortunately, but I have monitoring on my network for all my devices. I can clearly see it turning itself on briefly late at night to try and probe apple servers for something (powered off or sleep, don't matter). Fortunately my router has it on a Killswitch and only permits network traffic on it when it's through the work vpn. But it was quite annoying for a while getting alerts on my phone for an influx of DNS queries to apple servers at 2am lol.
