Hey Australian friends, please sign this petition, I'd hate to loose my legal identity because of some bigots.

Edit: if you want the exact link it is: https://equalityaustralia.org.au/hands-off-our-protections/

It is a petition by Equality Australia, writing or calling your MPs directly is also totally fine and encouraged!

@thisismissem @aussocialadmin There is no petition at the link provided. There is a letter asking people to sign a petition. It is full of links to the same site, all of which have extremely long, opaque URI parameters. As does the link in your toot.

Where is the actual petition and how does one sign it?

Hands off our protections

Our protections matter Our communities are facing some of the most serious attacks on our rights and protections in many years.  Right now, multiple Bills are being pushed that would strip protections from trans people and take a wrecking ball to Australia’s anti-discrimination laws more broadly.  No one should be singled out for exclusion because of [...]Read More...

@futzle @thisismissem @aussocialadmin The first link in the page ("defanged") is to

track.equalityaustralia.org.au/r?t=abtnnjq6dnrrztonzuaba2qvfq2kfbtnnq3xw6qraidt34otafido36saoefvlk4isofjcqu5l2ppzsqjmqlymencnqka2zino4fbnldgtpwwothukkmrnqmwrkvryaofrdacz32ukagtxzb4bssv5vcocgxplhvr33bezbr

You can see why it might cause hesitation...

Also, the petition itself has this below the input fields: "By supporting this campaign you give permission for Equality Australia to contact you." That should be a checkbox, defaulting to unchecked.

So the petition gets one less signature while I go write my own letter.

@kauer mate you could just support this person being recognised as a person and unsubscribe for anything else that gets sent. yeah the lack of an opt in is not great, but it's a fuck tonne better than (legally) not existing @futzle @thisismissem @aussocialadmin
@warkolm @futzle @thisismissem @aussocialadmin I wrote a letter instead. Ink on paper, even.
@kauer Cheers, sincere thanks for supporting the cause.
@kauer @warkolm @futzle @aussocialadmin sure, that works if you wanna contact your MP directly — I personally don't have an MP as I don't live in Australia; that Barbara is just my mum who sent me the link (she's in Australia & loves two trans people & is a big ally). Was trying to provide one link with the explainer + petition link. Updated to include the direct petition link.
@warkolm You've wildly missed what they were saying here.

Equality Australia slams new anti-trans bill that would weaken protections for all women - Equality Australia

25 May 2026 - National LGBTIQ+ group Equality Australia has slammed a private member’s bill that would weaken federal anti-discrimination protections for LGBTIQ+ people and women.  Nationals MP Alison Penfold on Monday introduced the bill to federal parliament, which includes a narrow definition of sex and seeks to exclude trans women from a range of public spaces [...]Read More...

@kauer There's also no opt-out for communications.

I still signed it but disabled the hide my mail address that I created.

@kauer @thisismissem @aussocialadmin The long params in the links are because this comes from an email ("Dear Barbara") and they're tracking which recipients follow which links. This will mess up their analytics a bit but it's safe.

@thisismissem @aussocialadmin

I don't know why, but for some reason the Equality Aust site can't even seem bothered including links to anything useful/significant (y'know, like the bill content, or any background info) so people can be informed rather than just sign something blindly. I tend to like to know what I'm agreeing/disagreeing with.

So for anyone else interested, I found the background info page with a link to the bill contents here:

@owen3d Thank you. I had to go look it up on aph and read the bill myself.

The petition is also quite vague if they want it to be tabled in parliament (at least if the language on Equality's signing page is correct - it's far from clear those are the full words of the petition). They need to be very specific with what they want parliament to do.

The private member's bill is gross and it needs better opposition than this.

@thisismissem Signed and boosted and sent to my children to sign
@thisismissem @aussocialadmin signed and called my local member :)

@thisismissem

NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN. We're supposed to be better than this!

@TinyGamerTris yeah, I thought the whole Tickle v Giggle case was the end of it, but far-right or conservative politicians are promising if they get re-elected they'll do the bullshit that has queer people in the UK marginalised and suffering for absolutely no benefit to society besides placating some bigot's unfounded fears.

@thisismissem

I swear our rightwing parties have gotten 200% worse in the last five years, it's bloody terrifying how fast they're extremising themselves.
