Timothy Snyder suggests (plausibly) the Tangerine Tyrant is bringing about the 'superpower suicide' of the US... entirely to enrich his friends & family.

In a sense we all have intuited this for some time, but Snyder joins the dots in a helpful way.

indeed, we might conclude the individualistic logic of the US has finally (as many would expect) bitten it in the arse courtesy of the corrupt family Trump.

Timothy Snyder: We are watching the US attempt a superpower suicide

From the abandonment of its alliances to the dismantling of its education system, Trump’s administration is tearing down the institutions that really made America great, writes the historian

The Nerve
@ChrisMayLA6 @Compassionatecrab I think that’s been obvious for a while.
@JaneinNJ @ChrisMayLA6 @Compassionatecrab He is doing what is known in mob circles as a "bust out."
@culturednyc @JaneinNJ @ChrisMayLA6 @Compassionatecrab To where? Is there a destination?

@geolaw @JaneinNJ @ChrisMayLA6 @Compassionatecrab

Not a destination, it's a process where they extract everything they can out of a business and then leave the creditors and everyone else holding the bag. Featured in Goodfellas and The Sporanos. I recon it's been done to a whole country before, but never on this scale.

@culturednyc @JaneinNJ @ChrisMayLA6 @Compassionatecrab And at the small scale it is repeatable. There are other targets. So what next? Because I doubt that Trump will quietly retire

@geolaw @culturednyc @JaneinNJ @ChrisMayLA6 @Compassionatecrab

He'll probably be dead within a year anyway. He maybe wants to upgrade from a gold to a platinum toilet on the way out.

The rest of those in on it become super rich and therefore by the core principles of the US not accountable for anything they did. That's the plan, all of the plan.

It'd be nice to prove them wrong about the last bit, but they're playing the odds and the odds say what's left of the US will keep licking boot.

@culturednyc @ChrisMayLA6 @Compassionatecrab Never heard of that, it went right by me on The Sopranos. Doesn’t sound too different from when private equity takes over companies, loads them up with debt, then shuts them down bc they’re “too expensive” to sustain.
@ChrisMayLA6
It's not a suicide, it's more like an entry into the Darwin awards.

@davidgrieve @ChrisMayLA6

I say it can be hard to completely categorize it in terms we would apply to individuals.

The deliberate actions of project 2025 and NRx is to eradicate the enlightenment. Their idea is that the west took the wrong turn with its. For them dominance hierarchy is the natural order of human societies, and democracy is failed

The cultural anthropologist wouldn’t explain in great detail why that is not true

@ChrisMayLA6
It was always Putin's dream that someday the USA would be sold off to The Oligarchs, as his beloved USSR was. In Trump he found the puppet he needed. It was the long game. Putin was a Young Pioneer learning chess when Trump was pretending to be into sports.
@ChrisMayLA6
The Trump regime seeks to sell its nonsense to people with less of an ability to think. Often education helps students to think. Social media often is more receptive to Trump nonsense.

@ChrisMayLA6 not sure this is a secret, they literally spelled it out in their Project 2025 manifesto, and everyone in Trump's inner circle has said clearly they think the collapse of the US economy would benefit them.

If you're writing this now, it's way too late

@sortius @ChrisMayLA6

Project 2025 is joined by people from Silicon Valley, Peter Thiel and Elon Musk and the rest loosely known as NRx.

They are deluded cultists, and the more you understand research psychology into people who experience impunity or are given advantages, it doesn’t take long for them to perceive themselves as meritorious and shut down empathy.

There is a reason why egalitarian societies have something called the egalitarian ethic, basically enlightenment stuff

@ChrisMayLA6

ETTD
People think it's fucking t-shirt to sell.

@ChrisMayLA6 It’s not really a suicide. More like an infection that was allowed to spread until the patient reached sepsis and now it’s almost too late for any reasonable intervention.
All while the patient sits quietly while vital signs are dropping but says “I don’t really feel that good but I think it’ll be OK after the next election.

@bouriquet @ChrisMayLA6

what "reasonable intervention" is possible?

@ChrisMayLA6 This feels like the logical consequence of decades of letting rich people donate millions of dollars to political causes.

@ChrisMayLA6

As a citizen of a formerly allied country the US has threatened to annex, I welcome the coming collapse and wish it speed.

@ChrisMayLA6 Pretty sure he's doing precisely what Putin wants him to do.

It's just unclear whether he gets paid for it.
@ChrisMayLA6 Excellent article. A good depiction of how things seem to be evolving in the US
@ChrisMayLA6 Good article. Even if sanity prevails in the future and the oligarchs get kicked out, it will cost decades to rebuild trust. If ever.
