@jwildeboer I like the claim ā€žAn S3 object store so reliable you can run it outside datacentersā€œ. šŸ˜…
@jwildeboer @homelab So, does that mean it could make sense to try this on my homelab with only 1Gbit connection between the nodes?
Ceph did not fly (to be expected). But those numbers almost make me believe that Garage could be light weight enough for this to work …
@thoralf It's running perfectly fine in my homelab with 3 Lenovo tiny PCs with 1 Gbit network. In part 3 of my short series on using Garage in my homelab I do some benchmarks too: https://jan.wildeboer.net/2026/01/3-Using-Garage-S3/ @homelab
S3 Storage At Home With Garage Part 3: In Practice

Now that we have our own local S3 storage with garage and it is reachable via the standard https: route, let’s start doing things with it. Benchmarks! Backups of machines in the local network and maybe more!

@jwildeboer @homelab Sweet!
I really love to read that. Will give it a try. Thanks!
@thoralf @jwildeboer @homelab Iā€˜m running a two node cluster: a local node is running on my home server and the second one is just a spare Raspberry Pi 4 with a 5 TB HDD which I placed at my brother’s home. I’m using the ā€œclusterā€ as a backup target for Kopia, which works pretty fine, although there’s just a 15 MBit connection between the nodes. I’m thinking about a third node to increase redundancy. One catch: backups are slower than usually, but as they are incremental it’s ok. #Kopia #Garage
@jwildeboer @homelab garage is cool and stuff, but after todays playing with it , figured out that does not support anonymous access to data :( so cant be used as storage for web projects
@jwildeboer @homelab
Ooh, this might be a good alternative to our current rsync / syncthing arrangements (over tinc) @Slash909uk ?

@phlash @jwildeboer @homelab min network speeds of 50Mbps could be a problem? This is why we rejected all storage cluster software so far... none of them cope with ADSL speed networks and downtime. Except Syncthing.

Interesting option to try, however 😁

@jwildeboer run #seaweedfs on #freebsd a couple of weeks … install and usage is fine
