How does software engineering in IT looks as of May 2026?

✔️ AI AI AI

✔️ AI driven layoffs not 1 or 2 employees but it comes in thousands of layoffs at a time

✔️ package manager getting compromised is daily event

✔️ cloud provider blocks your account randomly using AI agents and AI support doesn't understand anything

✔️ github hacked and all code is available for sale

✔️ AI submitted low quality patches overwhelming FLOSS devs

what else am i missing?

GitHub confirms breach after hackers put stolen source code up for sale

Incident Report: May 19, 2026- GCP Account Suspension https://blog.railway.com/p/incident-report-may-19-2026-gcp-account-outage

rest you can search it lol

@nixCraft I love how the poisoned vs code extension name is prominently displayed

@nixCraft Lol.

I miss the "if AI goes wrong is your fault", like if there was a choice to decide whether to use it or not.

@nixCraft Two privilege escalation bugs in the Linux kernel publicized within the same month? Could affect software engineering tangentially at least.

@PepVerbsNouns @nixCraft

High quality (ancient) vulnerabilities found in system software...

@nixCraft yes, in spain you cannot access github (and a lot of other sites) any day that there is a match of "La Liga"
@nixCraft My favourite one that I hear a lot "Just ask AI...." when a task needs to be done.
@n1 @nixCraft a true classic reply I also hear too many times nowadays..
@nixCraft @ghalldev Every manager grinning and saying “I LOVE AI HA HA HA” in every company meeting like they have a gun to their head
@nixCraft This is simply not what I understand under pure software engineering. It's software engineering with extra bloat, slop and complicated Big Tech dependencies that cause a bunch of extra problems.

@nixCraft

- intellectual property theft is still illegal and harshly prosecuted if done by a human, but accepted in practice if a software program does it.

@nixCraft
Still not making money for vendors.
In reality no saving for users, at same quality, actually increased cost.
@nixCraft Google is doing like that husband who cut off his sexual attributes to spite his wife.
@nixCraft internal tokenmaxxing leaderboard employee deathmatch
@nixCraft i think you missed the incomprehensible "productivity" gains that *totally* aren't based on pure vibes

@nixCraft Doing BDD by hand and referring to my retirement savings as „euthanasia fund”.

Same old, same old.

@nixCraft I've been working my ass off outside for 1/3 the money and sometimes I hate it but mostly it feels great.

Except for the excruciating pain it's great.

Hard labor and spondy don't mix very well but so far I'm managing it. I'm 50 and I haven't put in like this since I was 24 so I'm only able to do half a day but I'm building up.

Fuck it. Maybe letting AI write all that stupid shit is fine. Nobody actually wanted my expertise anyway. They just wanted a program they could hawk.

@nixCraft

>github hacked and all code is available for sale

so i can finally release the stuff i made at my employer to flex at new job interviews? asking for a friend

@nixCraft
✔️ applying for hundreds of jobs and have only a handful of interviews because others companies "while [they] were impressed with your qualifications, [they]’ve decided to move forward with candidates whose experience is a bit more aligned with what [they] need for this role right now".
@nixCraft every day is "Zero Day" day due to agents monitoring public git repos for bugfix commits and using LLMs to rapidly create exploits before downstream projects have time to patch.

allegedly!

@pmjv
drugs? in my art? it's more likely than you think!
@vitex @donbahno
@ozzelot @pmjv @vitex Yes! I like that penguin with the joint. "Linux distributions you should avoid"—that's funny.

@donbahno
you should avoid linuk distributions if you can help it

*bsd all the way, plan9 for that extra step beyond
@pmjv @vitex

@nixCraft Absolutely related to the fact that AI support doesn't understand anything
@nixCraft On the bright side, Claude & Co. seem to have not read enough Perl to compose credible slop-patches. o some software is resisting…
@nixCraft
Google declaring the end of the web and search as we know it.

Google Search as you know it is over | TechCrunch

Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and interactive interfaces — a shift that could further reduce traffic to publishers across the web.

@nixCraft overwhelming BOO's for AI evangelists speaking at graduations!
