Today is my three year anniversary from the date I got Shingles. My hip, knee and abdominal muscles on my right side are still fucked up from the nerve damage it caused.

I'm finally, as of about a month ago, down to a one 75mg pill a day of my nerve pain medication, after a high of 300mg a day for a long time.

Go get your shingles shot if you're eligible (ie 50+ or immunocompromised) and have had the chicken pox. Do it.

@casseagull I play old man hockey with some players that are Conservative and tend towards antivax but they all get their shongles shit. One fellow got the shongles at 49 and he was fried for 6 months before he could return and drag himself around the ice is slow motion.
@johnefrancis Glad that even the antivax curious don't fuck with shingles.
@casseagull @johnefrancis You can get the shingles vax at 50, but it's not free, right? (Guess who turns 50 in a few weeks)
@mariellequinton @johnefrancis Yes that's right, though if you have insurance often the insurance will cover it.
@casseagull @johnefrancis I don't get why the delay of paying for it. Sigh.
@mariellequinton @johnefrancis It has something to do with the rate of infections being highest in that age cohort but it makes no sense at all because the two younger cohorts added together make more than the targetted one. If you give the vaccines earlier, you can nip the higher and more life-alteringly impactful infections in the bud.
@casseagull @johnefrancis Exactly. As it currently stands, it's a vaccine for the wealthier. Plus, I'd imagine better uptake with seniors if it starts at 50.

@mariellequinton @casseagull @johnefrancis Yeah - I was bummed that it wasn't covered by OHIP (because it should be), but I paid for mine out of pocket last year (in Ottawa) and it wasn't cheap!

I know someone who had shingles on his face and almost lost his eye, so... it made it seem a lot cheaper. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

(Great PSA Cassie!)

@ackack @casseagull @johnefrancis Yeah, my mother had it bad, but oddly her doctor never recommended she get the vaccine after. I had to tell her to get the vaccine because it could come back. This is another reason why I think earlier is better. The delay of a few years is less of a big deal at 50 than 65 and I imagine lots of people don't get it right at 65.
@mariellequinton @ackack @johnefrancis Oh yeah you can get it repeatedly. I've heard of some people having a prolonged shingles infection over many months that never really ends. It's super important to get the vaccine.
@casseagull @mariellequinton @ackack @johnefrancis My sister has had shingles 4x (sheโ€™s under 50), other sister had it twice (under 40), and I had it once at age 15 (Iโ€™m now 50). Got the vax as soon as I hit 50! It left permanent scars 35 years ago. All of us sisters also had chicken multiple times. Itโ€™s too bad we all had to wait until 50 for the vax.
@ymasumac @casseagull @mariellequinton @ackack @johnefrancis what the heck you can get it as young as 15? that's terrible
@megabyteghost @ymasumac @casseagull @ackack @johnefrancis Is there a generic component to it, I wonder? Plus I've never known someone to get chicken pox more than once. Hmm.
@mariellequinton @megabyteghost @ymasumac @ackack @johnefrancis It's the same virus, sitting dormant in your system waiting to be activated (which it can be over and over again). I have a friend who had it when she was ... 19, I think? It's often triggered by stressful periods.
@casseagull @mariellequinton @megabyteghost @ackack @johnefrancis Stress is a major component. My parents had just announced a move from RI to IN. I broke out into shingles. My sisters have kids, so stress there. Our family is very susceptible to issues manifesting in our skin. Chicken pox, shingles, hives, rashes, stress bumps, acne, wartsโ€ฆ *le sigh*
@casseagull @mariellequinton @johnefrancis Really, really good insurance will.
@drwho @casseagull @mariellequinton @johnefrancis my BCBS ins covered it 100%. It better for $900/mo premium.
@ymasumac @drwho @casseagull @johnefrancis Canadian health insurance is quite a bit different (drugs being the only thing you have to pay for here, generally)

@casseagull @EricCarroll Eligibility in the UK is an outrageous age 65+!

(I had shingles when I was 11 and it sucked, royally, although not as badly as it does for middle aged or older people.)

@cstross @casseagull @EricCarroll

Got mine yesterday. Had to pay for it, though.

@Anne_Delong
I paid for mine too due to the Ontario age qualification being, like
@cstross 65+

@casseagull

@casseagull I had a mild reaction to my first shingles vaccine, and a pretty hefty reaction to the 2nd one (rash and some swelling), but that was absolutely nothing compared to what I saw a co-worker go through when he got shingles a few years ago.

Complete agreement that everyone should get vaccinated if/when able.

@casseagull
When I was working a few years ago one of my coworkers got it really bad. He told me how painful it was. Booked an appointment that day and got one.
@casseagull NB in the UK if you're over 50 and *not* immunocompromised you can still get the Shingles jab, but not on the NHS. Currently costs about ยฃ460 for a course of two shots 8 weeks apart from Boots.
@lnr Wow, it's quite a bit less than that here in Canada. For the two shots itcost just over $400 CAD, which works out to around ยฃ216. That's an incredible price difference!
@casseagull The price was pretty much as painful as the sore arm!
@casseagull I'm still getting turned away, even with a prescription.
@drwho That is infuriating. Hopefully you can find someone who will administer it to you. My pharmacist did my shots and she was possibly more excited about it than I was because she had observed what a terrible infection and after effects I'd had.
@casseagull I keep trying. Tried three states so far, no dice. Eventually I'll just be old enough for them to give in.
@casseagull I'm at it right now, four months in. There are a few palliatives I learnt of.
Besides the diazepines, acetyl-L-carnitine works for pain relief, but it has to be medicine grade one: the gym supplements don't contain even the minimum dose promised. They're scam.
B12 vitamin is the only thing to actually cure. It has to be *massive*, daily intake is usually 2.5 micrograms, but in this case we need at least 1000 (yes, 400x). I'm starting getting *slightly* better with 3000. Ask your MD

@casseagull

sorry you had to suffer through that and thank you for thinking enough of others to provide the warning.

@casseagull We thank God for the NHS here in the UK.

@casseagull Friday is shot number one.

I hope you can keep reducing that medication! Much support to you!

@casseagull No longer requires having had the chicken pox, in the USA. I did not have them (was tested for it) so I didn't get the vax. Then, last year, my doc told me of the policy change and I got the shots (insurance did indeed pay for them, too).
@casseagull My father, in the UK, had shingles in his early 30's. He had it 'zapped' because it was on his face and was told that it was spreading and could have compromised his sight. I wonder if this is an immune issue which affect the neurodiverse community more often?

@GutterPoetry There's a not terrible chance. Mine seemed to have been brought on after a period of prolonged stress (a long bout of food poisoning and then some life stuff).

They've also discovered through an experiment in Wales that receiving the vaccine lowers the risk/rate of dementia, which also seems to have a high rate of correlation with neurodiversity (untreated ADHD specifically).

@casseagull I had Shingles in early 2023. I was 49 so hadn't gotten the shots yet. One of the worst and most painful illnesses I've ever had and I still have nerve effects to this day. I was able to get the shots later, which is good. I'm glad I have that protection against it happening again! Get your shots people, you don't want this!
@casseagull Also, such vaccines ought to be provided free of charge, particularly to low-income seniors.

@casseagull

Yes! Get the shot! You do NOT want shingles!

That said, tho, it's not a guarantee against it. I had my first bout of shingles while I was in my 30s and got the vax a short while later. (This was long before all the restrictions set in.) Despite being fully vaxxed, I got shingles again about ten years later. And on the other side of my body, thus proving just how fucked up my nervous system has become. My doc says I should get a booster now.

@casseagull In Australia it's free for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people aged 50+ years. Immunocompromised people aged 18+ years are also eligible for the free vaccine. It's free for those aged 65+ years. For everyone else, you can purchase it from a pharmacy and prices vary. At my local pharmacy it costs $281.99 per dose with a valid prescription.
@casseagull I am a father of two children from Gaza and we lost our house and now we live in a tent and no one supported us for More thana week ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
"The price of a cup of coffee in your country might provide a meal for my kidshttps://chuffed.org/project/178919-osama-al-shawaf-official-help-fund-palestinian-family-crisis-in-gaza

@casseagull I got shingles in the (3 week?) gap between my first and second shots for it! 11 weeks of misery, almost no sleep, unable to drive due to the pain in my shoulder and back (made wose by the angle of holding the steering wheel) and living on painkillers.

At the time I thought the pain would never end and my life would never return to normal (fortunately it did), but when I hear stories like yours of people suffering for years from shingles I realise I got off lightly. Good luck and I hope it ends for you soon.

Get vaccinated for shingles as soon as you're eligible and make damn sure your kids vaccinate their kids against bloody chickenpox so they don't have to suffer from this shit.

@casseagull

Here in Australia, the science says get the shingles vaccine if you're 50+

The government says you can pay for it yourself, unless you're 65+

Shingles vaccine may offer protection against vascular dementia, heart disease

The shingles vaccine may help lower a person's risk for vascular dementia by 50% and cardiovascular events like blood clots, heart attack, and stroke by 25-27%, according to a new study.

Medical News Today

@casseagull I tried. Today. I really did. But at the last minute I was rejected.

Okay, it was for the second in the series, and I did my date-math wrong. I've got to wait another five days before I can get stabbed again.

@casseagull got the shingles vax just before the covid thing. Had to pay for it but Iโ€™ve spent $$$ on far less useful things in my life ๐Ÿ™‚
@JohnnieMac Probably really good timing because from anecdotal evidence I've heard that shingles infections have gone up a lot post-Covid entering our lives.
@casseagull oh this is interesting. My neurologist recently gave me a new medication for migraine and I developed really intense pain my right abdomen. It never occurred to me it might be nerve pain, thank you! I will check in with her about it.
@casseagull miserable shot, totally worth it
@casseagull I'm so terrified of getting shingles. I will get my shot the day they let me.
