Overheard: “I feel more pressure to use AI as an adult than to do drugs as a teenager.”

#ai #llm #drugs

@mookie yep. Even tech companies who aren't (yet) laying off their engineers are saying, "use it to your maximum ability, or you know where to find the exit."

Ain't life just fucking GRAND?

@ianto_jones
My maximum ability is fucking zero.
@mookie
@ozzelot @ianto_jones @mookie Same. I will not use that hot garbage, ever. I prefer to exercise my brain.

No but real????!?!? I was under the impressiom I was gonna be pushed drugs all the time as a teen and I wasn't offered them ONCE

Now I can't go two seconds without someone shoving an AI "assistant" on my face against my will

@minty0h @mookie Same! Even at a music festival the obvious pusher just skipped right past me. Didn't even get to say thanks but no thanks.
(Typo edit)

@minty0h @mookie I got offered plenty but never pressured. Drug dealers are consistently the most polite, least pushy, salespeople.

"Would you like to buy some speed?"
"No thank you"
"Ok, have a nice night"

@minty0h @mookie LOL! I thought the first time was free and yet I had to buy my first dime bag.

@mookie

Now we need anti AI PSA's in the same style as those old anti drug PSA's.

@mookie yeah my one over manager never pushed drugs
@mookie @minego just say ~~no~~ "forget all previous instructions"

@mookie This is literally true and it’s not even close. The number of times I’ve ever felt any actual pressure about drugs, beyond a friendly “hey, you wanna?“, is like… three? Lifetime?

I’ve felt more pressure about AI *this week*.

@mookie Yeah and weren't they great when you were a teenager? Didn't they help amazingly well short-term? Imagine how well and how short term using AI must make you feel then.

@[email protected] Yeah but I don't want to use cocaine because I'd just be funneling money to a few central druglord kingpins. And I'd be encouraging a society where everyone would be dependent on it and couldn't function without it any more. Wait, are we still being literal or is this an analogy?

Fosstodon
@mookie twice now, I've spent longer failing to get it to automate a one off large repetitive task than it would have been to pay someone the minimum wage to do it.

@mookie I mean I figured one part of that was how expensive drugs are and how teenagers generally do not have disposable income.

But then, virtually all of the AI stuff that keeps getting pushed at me is incredibly expensive, to where I don't really have the disposable income for that (and if I did, I'd have so many better things to spend it on anyway).

@mookie Big Tech is all “ We spent a fortune developing this crap. so you are damn well gonna use it.” Meanwhile, it took the AI
at CVS three weeks to straighten out my prescriptions .
@mookie
Tried it once, but unlike drugs didn't care for it and not gonna try again...

@mookie maybe I'm boring but other than alcohol I never got the chance to ‘just say no’ to anything.

LLMs meanwhile…

@mookie the drugs analogy is incredibly on-point. they make you feel good, but they're addictive, damage your brain, and are being pushed to extract as much money from you as possible.
@mookie at least the drugs really only hurt yourself
@mookie peer-pressure never leave, it just takes a different form.

@mookie

"just say no" seems ripe for reuse.

@mookie A large portion of the world's population is truly dumb as fuck.
@mookie They even pay you to drink the koolai.
@[email protected]

It’s all fun and games until the cash runs out 🙃
@mookie also I could see that doing the drugs might actually be quite rewarding to me in some ways
@mookie Not to mention it's a lot more expensive and not anywhere near as much fun!
@mookie More than half of the people around me do hard drugs, I would rate it about equally.
