I'm obviously not serious, but the issue of scams and fraud are hitting older people in terrible ways and not much is being done about it.
We have activated every gambling addition in the country.
A more serious proposal is a list that people with issues with gambling could add themselves to that would block their cards from being processed by any gambling or prediction outfit.
You could get off the list by doing some forms and a waiting period.
Australia has a system where you can be added to a self-exclusion list for gambling services hosted in AU.
Anecdotally, I hear that being on this list results in more spam from overseas online gambling services that are not covered by the exclusion.
The anecdotal example I gave was from someone who used that option. It works from a list of known gambling payment destinations, but knows nothing of the frequently ephemeral overseas examples. And it seems also that there are services that use PayID email addresses to route funds to selected gambling sites. It's good to have options like these, but they can give a false sense of security to concerned friends and relatives.
I want to see kalshi and others included in something like this in the US.
And they'd throw a fit about it which I think would be educational to see.
Very little was being enforced before they gutted consumer protections... right now next to nothing is being investigated ... it's a big free for all.
Check on your people. Review their bank statements with them.
Gambling isn't real economic activity and should not be counted in GDP.
It creates no value.
@futurebird I'm pretty sure this exists even in most US states, try looking for Self-Exclusion Lists. Maryland has one.
Now, I've also heard that some companies go out of their way to target people on these lists. And all the fun new gambling companies operate on a zero-ethics model already ("Kalshi: Legal In All 50 States!"), so I don't know how effective the lists are.
@futurebird On the website for my card there are topics for the payments, and I believe that stuff can be enabled and disabled, and if I remember correctly gambling was disabled by default. I'm not sure whether that's some Italian or EU regulation, a choice of my bank, or a combination of those things.
I'm also not sure how well they work in practice: some times the topic under which other expenses are categorized are a bit creative.
but it does make your proposal feel not farfetched at all.
It's the only way we could get work permits :(
Now just wait a second here missy π π
better yet, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood
You will be assigned a youthful guardian.
Think of the old people. :(
I beg to differ for myself. My son knows damned well that I am fully capable of holding my own in this age of trumpism.
