You all know that Bandcamp is owned by Songtradr, who gutted it a lot. But don't fret, we have a new and better alternative now. It launched yesterday:

https://www.subvert.fm/

It is a #CoOp, so it is not in the hands of big money but in the hands of us, the consumers and creators.

@bitboxer Now that you've become a famous influencer i beg you not to forget your followers from your beginnings.
@bitboxer What's their stance on AI-created music? Serious question, no snark intended.

@bitboxer I didn't know it had been gutted. What did they do? If there's reason to avoid it I'd like to know. I went to Bandcamp recently because an artist I follow was there, and it was a way to support them.

Thanks in advance for sharing the details of what changed and how it impacts artists there.

@mason When they bought Bandcamp, they removed half the staff. And the journalistic part is completely gone.
@bitboxer Ah, that sucks. Thank you for telling me.

@bitboxer

One problem is, also with Mirlo… most non-musician people I know don't even know Bandcamp. I am serious.

So putting my music on a bunch of even lesser-known platforms in the end will result in exactly… nothing. Except for me having more work. I made below 5€ so far this year from Bandcamp.

I'm not trying to say that I don't like the idea of a co-op alternative to Bandcamp. But it doesn't make things easier in everyday life.

Also, Bandcamp and all its larger alternatives are US-based and rely on US-based payment providers. Which might turn out as a problem for the rest of the world.

@nielso @bitboxer I agree. It's so hard to keep up as a musician, and toying up between putting music where most people can find versus supporting the right platforms. Can anyone explain to me if this one is federated like Bandwagon?

@nielso

Curious to know your thoughts on bandwagon. I've been using niche sites like this to find new artists to avoid AI slop

https://bandwagon.fm/

Bandwagon.fm

Bandwagon.fm

@kjv

I have one album out there on Bandwagon, and I can't sense any effect. Which doesn't mean there is none.

@nielso yes, it is always hard to know where to spent your limited time/energy. I personally would say it all differs depending on your use case.

I would post my music at the bigger platforms AND on my private site/Instagram linktree I would have this as no 1 spot with a "buy my music, fairly paid, no money to big corps" message. But I can totally understand why you would choose a different path.

At the end it's a hen-and-egg situation. There is no change without us all advertising for it.

@bitboxer So far so good. Is the official account still active? https://mastodon.social/@subvertworld
@bitboxer Great stuff! I was looking at this and joining. We have not yet incorporated our label though, will have to make it an official business first. 🤔
@bitboxer The server is getting hammered, getting errors on new sign up. This is a good thing!

@bitboxer there's also the excellent bandwagon.fm - which is part of the #fediverse FWIW

Exciting to see new options for independent musicians!

@bitboxer [edit: oops this is a Bandcamp alternative - still excellent!] Oooh thanks for this link! I love https://coopradio.org, delighted to add another coop radio station!

Thanks to the board, staff and volunteers that helped make for another fantastic evening of music, stories and dancing!

Vancouver Co-operative Radio
@datum subvert is not a radio station, but a digital record store.
@bitboxer no fedi account for subvert? 😊

@kleisli @bitboxer

Join as a member. Make a proposal for a Fedi account :)

@bitboxer cool share thanks bitty box
@bitboxer
I will have a page there as soon as I can get to it.

@bitboxer

looks like another @mirlo to me. it's great to have better alternatives to Bandcamp but the future has to be a decentralized Spotify. the musicians have their own site and we listen in an app we choose and the money is transferred directly in amounts that work for both sides.

@wjmaggos @mirlo the problem I see with that is trust. How do I know that this random site of that musician that I just discovered, is not a scam and will not rob my money if I enter my credit card. That’s the hardest part of online retail. And if we have a handful of co op companies who can be the trustees in the middle, this will help.

@bitboxer @mirlo

yes but I don't think coops in the middle solve this either. they become more useful as they get bigger but that gives them more power and they can always eventually abuse that power. or maybe even just do something that only a quarter of the musicians hate. it can't sustain.

instead imo we need less work on competing systems, more work on protocols/APIs, apps and servers. and then a fuckton of advocacy for decentralized fiat.
