@mos_8502 ??? these draconian ID requirements are recent developments and digital releases have been sold for decades without any of it. if it's a spotify issue then it's not a matter of physical release vs digital download, it's spotify vs anything else

i would like to see a future where music can continue to be enjoyed unencumbered without limiting myself to picking through scraps of cds in a thrift store. i have hundreds of GB of digital purchases, real files on my disks, non-DRM-encumbered, that cannot be taken away, that will never require ID to play, but also were never on physical media and will never be on physical media.

(i also have the memory that back when cds were sold retail, some nonzero amount of retailers would deny selling anything to minors that had the parental advisory label, even though it wasn't any kind of law. being physical media ever actually prevented any of this moral crusade - look at video games as another example)

I think the core insight is that tech stock valuations depend entirely on future growth potential and any tech company without that growth on the horizon is just a regular old service provider where returns are incremental and programmers are a cost center. Now that the industry has basically flatlined and technology stratas have normalized the whole AI push is a last-trench effort to escape being priced like normal companies instead of magic ponies, which means stock price collapse.
