Is it true that "no relay" plugs are suitable for monitoring energy use in washing machine, fridge freezer, tumble drier and so on (ie inductive loads)?

I've read in a couple of places that people are doing this. This seems questionable, but idk enough myself. If not, what do folk use to monitor power in these cases?

@happyborg The problem with SWITCHING inductive loads is that they give the relay terminals a hammering. I can't see any problem with monitoring them using such a plug, provided you're not planning on switching them. It's something that's made me a bit edgy, though - I'd like to monitor, eg, my fridge, but really, really don't want some glitch to end up switching it off without my realising! It'd be nice to have a plug that monitored, but didn't switch.
