Today on "can't make this shit up":

I've been in a German hospital for a few weeks. For every meal we get to pick from three options. My hospital roomie picked "fish and chips".

Lo and behold:

@valcurious This might be the best british-person-in-germany post ever
@aesthr It's beautiful isn't it? Like. I cannot tell if this is humour or a dead serious attempt at fish and chips without knowing what it is. We're still chuckling at this an hour later
@valcurious @aesthr That is equal to serving spaghetti with ketchup and call it spaghetti bolognese.
@Amorpheus @aesthr Or serving spaghetti with cream sauce and calling it "carbonara", as is common in this country? hehehe
@Amorpheus @valcurious @aesthr There is no such thing as "Spaghetti Bolognese". Italians view that abomination exactly like Brits do the "Chips" here.
@virbonus @Amorpheus @valcurious @aesthr There clearly isn't no such thing as spaghetti Bolognese, it's just not how Italians serve Bolognese sauce. You might as well insist deep dish pizza doesn't exist
@kittyboy77 @virbonus @valcurious @aesthr I really regret not havin' brought up a Vitello Tonnato analogy... 🫤
@Amorpheus @virbonus @valcurious @aesthr Honestly the mental image you invoked was the right kind of terrible IMO but yes, that probably fits

@valcurious @aesthr

It must be a shit post. Lorenz chips are way too expensive for hospital fare.

@valcurious damn not even normal chips but paprika chips
@tashatheinnkeeper In most parts of Germany I have been to so far it is the default flavor, interestingly!
@valcurious damn interesting (my ass could never)
@tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious i miss it so. It's really hard to find here and it is indeed the default in Germany
@Taco_lad @tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious if you can find an Asian or Chinese grocery store, check there. They tend to focus on even more wild flavors, but given the variety some of them carry, it's worth a look.
@tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious Paprika chips *are* normal chips in Germany ^ ^
@creohn @tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious They even put paprika on their fries, the uncouth heathens!
@whvholst @creohn @tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious Fries with paprika is awesome though :D

@whvholst @creohn @tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious

That being said Pommes Frittes spice-mix is a bit more than just paprika, it's paprika, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. Some times with some sellerie or cayenne pepper as well.

@sotolf @creohn @tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious I prefer them the way the Belgians make them. With good mayonaise on top.
@whvholst @tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious & eggs sunny side up with paprika … it’s the best
@creohn @tashatheinnkeeper @valcurious Ok, that is worth giving a try. On fries it is pure heresy, in fried eggs it sounds reasonable.
@creohn @whvholst @valcurious eggs with paprika area really good. But you gotta add the paprika almost when you’re done or it’ll taste very bad
@valcurious the lawful evil option obvs.
@[email protected] @valcurious technically correct.
the best kind of correct
@valcurious in Germany we call this "Fachkräftemangel"

@valcurious as others have said, paprika flavoured crisps are the default flavour in Germany.

*German* --- *English*
Chips --- Crisps
Pommes --- French fries
Steakhousepommes (or similar) --- Chips, but with salt and paprika seasoning
Kartoffelecken --- Potato wedges

And somebody in the catering department of the hospital was having a laugh or being creatively mischievous. 😃

@valcurious Well, I see both fish and chips, so .... :D
@valcurious At least - I think that's a fish but with the "breading" (I hope), it could actually be any piece of thing :D
@svelmoe Yeah, we call it the mystery food game! Some days its very hard to tell what we're served even full well knowing what we chose for the day. Just hospital food things!
(or it's a sneaky way to keep us exercising the ol mental faculties, who knows!)
@valcurious I don't see the problem 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@valcurious I mean, obviously hilarious, but maybe better than trying to serve actual fries in a hospital setting. I know chips are supposed to be somewhat soggy, but lukewarm and soggy is usually terrible.

But the one thing i am wondering is: are these actual mushy peas? Because that would be a German first for me.

@halfbyte Indeed! According to roommate it was. Probably the blandest attempt at them from what I hear, but an attempt!

@valcurious @halfbyte my guess would have been polenta, but happy to be corrected. Though if it tasted of peas I'd say it looks more like pease pudding (mashed peas) than mushy peas.

As to the chips (crisps) in England in shops they always seem to be offered as part of a ''meal deal" (sandwich, can of sugary fizzy pop and crisps) . So an absolute no-goer for me.

@valcurious Well, there was an attempt! At least it looks edible
@valcurious Well, that IS fish and chips, isn't it? Except when you're a Brit. 😂
@valcurious that's fish and crisps!
@Petermid wasn't even that crispy, that fish! ;D
@valcurious at least in GB that would be. In the Netherlands that would be vis en chips.
@valcurious they're using AI to generate meal ideas for the hospital kitchen
@valcurious

please let the green stuff be wasabi
🙏🏻🙏🏻
@sarah nope, German attempt at mushy peas! :D

@valcurious @sarah

Thank you! I was wondering what that might be.

@valcurious hey, this looks very much like the “fish and chips” I got at LAX before flying home to Australia!
@jpm Hahaha oh nooo! Wild :D
@valcurious when we were visiting England (our Hastings trip) with our school we were dispersed among different hosts. To my surprise, some of my classmates received that as part of their meal as well. A few friends and I were lucky to have foodie hosts. 😅
@greenWhale Whaaat proper English people got fish and chips wrong? That is wild, but so funny :D
@valcurious I don't think they got the names switched up, they just thought it was easier perhaps? I didn't speak to them myself so I have no good insight here, just that they saw this as 'normal food'.

@valcurious

americans and germans looking at uk cuisine:

"yeah, i think i understand"

@benroyce @valcurious yeah, I've seen a similar crazy meal served in Georgia USA !
