Looking for book recommendations.

Been on a long nonfiction run. I'm tired of learning about stuff. Just need some fiction. Something creative, something neat, maybe adventure, maybe dystopia, maybe gangster with a heart of gold, maybe breaking the psyche, world traveller, bicycle mechanic, just about anything.

Anyone reading anything great these days?

Holy smokes! This is excellent!

I'm looking up all of these and starting a spreadsheet.

@askDNA The Colour of Magic perhaps
@askDNA I’ve been reading books from Michael Connelly. Easy cop mysteries to follow especially the audio versions.
@askDNA “The Prince of Tides” by Conner
@askDNA I recommend A Long Way To A Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

@askDNA Hmm, well, hard to know what you might enjoy without some idea of what genres or themes you like, but in general I would happily recommend either of my two all-time favorite series, both fantasy:
1. Dragon Blood by Lindsay Buroker, starting with "Balanced on the Blade's Edge" (which you can probably find free in eBook format somewhere)
2. the Dark Lord Davi duology by Django Wexler, starting with "How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying"

There's also Legends and Lattes and its sequels, and Monk and Robot, and Murderbot (that one being more sci-fi), all of which are quite popular and I think would be appreciated by someone wanting a break from nonfiction. And none of these are really "heavy" reading either, which makes them better candidates for a first foray into fiction than something like Lord of the Rings or Mistborn (both also very good but much more complex).

@askDNA P.S. Project Hail Mary is also popular right now because of the movie, and it *is* a really good book, but there's some talk going around about some quasi-political statements the author made in a recent interview that, in the most charitable interpretation, showed rather poor judgment. So that one comes with a bit of an asterisk.

@askDNA Becky Chambers: creative, adventurous, travelling, hearts of gold.

You could either start with The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet or A Psalm for the Wild Built.

Farrier had been raised in the East… Furtive spaces on the outskirts of cities, truck stops in the middle of nowhere, and obscure research outposts — those are the places where Farrier did his work…

@askDNA I recommend: Children of Time
Science fiction novel by Adrian Tchaikovsky; the less you know about it the more it will surprise you.

And if you want a saga, The Expanse is absolutely awesome

@Johns_priv Thank you! Added Children of Time to the list. Btw, I LOVE The Expanse. Those books were so fun!
@askDNA
Almost everything by Sir Terry (Pratchett), disk world and so on.
And "Project Hail Mary" is great. I couldn't stop reading in the night.

@askDNA
I'd suggest all of the 20 Palaces books by Harry Connolly. They're written kind of like noir detective novels but the investigations are about magic.

Great suggestions so far. :)

"A Coup Of Tea" by Casey Blair. It's neat, smart, with great characters and quite a bit going on.

"The Devils" by Joe Abercrombie. The vatican's alternate history suicide squad. It's very funny and very gut-punchy. It's a really wild ride.

"Some Desperate Glory" by Emily Tesh. Military Sci-Fi full of surprises. Probably the best novel in the genre.
