RE: https://mas.to/@markwyner/116360220302747675

Update: after 17 sites and 11 CVs I’m pausing submissions. I need to re-focus on my lecture: https://mas.to/@markwyner/116559893895693710

My offer stands. If anyone needs a hand finding work, let me know. I’ve already reviewed 9 websites and 4 CVs. Which, by the way, were rad.

I keep seeing those layoffs and it makes me sad. Capitalism is punching down right now. Forcefully. Maybe I can help someone survive it. Hit me up if that’s you.

Y’all went to town on this post today. I now have a queue. 😂

I’m honored that folks out trust in me. I’ll do my best to help. Hang tight. I’ll be with y’all as soon as I can.

@markwyner

Urf. I'd love to take advantage of this, but I'm hoping to skate through at least the next year or so at my current gig & then f'ing •retire•* (public sector web work).

I do find myself fantasizing about what the next thing could be, though. Something in water conservation and/or renewables.

What a trip it would be to have a job I actually •wanted•....

* Assuming ofc the economy isn't irretrievably crashed by then....

(Reminds me, I need to look at retirement numbers....)

@cavyherd I love that you’re thinking this way. And I believe you’re not alone. If I didn’t LOVE what I do for a living as much as I do, I’d probably enjoy thinking about a new journey.

@markwyner

I have a tough time even imagining what it would be like to love what I do.

But having now done my mandated duty of supporting myself through my adulthood, maybe it's about damn time I take my turn...?

Scares the bejeebers out of me, of course....

This seems relevant:

@cavyherd I’m very fortunate that my hobby happens to feed my family. What a gift. I don’t take it for granted.

@markwyner

It would be fascinating to have a conversation about how you came to be in that situation.

I'll bet the process started very very early in your life. Like being allowed to believe that what you love •could• feed your family.

Or even that this could be a viable ambition....

@cavyherd it actually all started here:

https://markwrites.io/26-years-in-the-making-the-exhumation-of-cadaverous-quartet/

Quite literally. We spent countless hours writing/recording music. Then we packaged it in some photo-copied garbage we whipped up. I wanted more, so I learned how to design.

Then another band-mate told me I needed to make some dough to support my new family. So he hooked me up with a computer and some software. Turned out I loved design/code a LOT. Even more than playing music. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@markwyner I've been linking https://mongoose-studios.com on places like HN and stuff lately in lieu of a resume. Couldn't hurt to have a vibe-check.

@markwyner beautiful. I'm not (currently) in the design or IT worlds, but I think about the former and their intersection a LOT. In any case, I may just reach out
@markwyner This is super kind of you 🫶
@Gina this is anarchy and resistance. If we all work together, we weaken the systemic structures that billionaire fascists are trying to aggressively impose upon us.
@markwyner together matters because it's a LONG HAUL and we need to spell each other.
@Gina

@markwyner
Listen… I don't want to step on the queue, but can you get me the Workday PM address?

…or some web automation toolkits, I'm not picky…

@markwyner

First of all, this is super cool of you! Thank you for helping others.

But mainly, what advice do you have for someone who has worked in the dev space (really, manual QA) and is just not on board for the inevitability of all the things going AI? I guess learning a trade and starting over in your early 40s is doable, but the scenario ... just sucks.

@geofftc thanks for your kind words.

This whole AI thing is really hard. AI in our space is definitely inevitable. I’m struggling with it myself. So…I guess I’m not a great person to ask because I’m just as lost as everyone else.

But, really, starting a new career—even in your 40s, or later—is absolutely possible. People do that kind of thing even way later in life.

Whatever you do, just make sure it’s something that makes you happy. That’s the path. That’s the right call.

@markwyner
You're reward will be in heaven, Mark.
And thank YOU for being a saint.
@Guillotine_Jones I’m an atheist. But I do appreciate your kind sentiment. I’ll settle for a reward of helping all of us escape fascism.
@markwyner
Pleez pardon the expression, Mark, but amen.
@Guillotine_Jones pardoned! 😂 All is well, friend.
@markwyner oh wow, if you have any tips for a DevOps engineer that’s been out of work for 17 months now I would appreciate it! I have been applying everywhere I can and am not even getting a nibble
@markwyner thank you so much for doing this, extremely rad of you
@markwyner imma hit you up once I get my portfolio fixed ... turns out I had a lot of dead links, oof
@markwyner What a very kind offer. I’ll do the same here in the UK, but first I need to get my ducks in a row. Except they are squirrels. And several are rabid.
@markwyner Thank you for doing this 🫶.
