To opt out, just don't have a face

#London #FacialRecognition

@pluralistic
I wonder if these dudes would appreciate their faces being recognized? 🤔
@pluralistic There's a certain irony to them looking upset that you're taking pictures of their faces.
@pluralistic I wonder what they’d think if some regular dude rolled up in his van doing this on his own rig.

@manchicken what makes you think this is an actual police van and not just one painted as such?

@pluralistic

@dacmot @pluralistic I have no good reason to believe such a thing, nor do any passers-by. This is one of the problems with surveillance.
@pluralistic “OK, who’s that wiseass taking photos of us…” - looks at facial recognition results - “oh shit”.
@pluralistic look at those two boot lickers with their best “just doing my job” face on
@pluralistic "There is no legal requirement for you to pass through the LFR system."
Oh great, thanks. I'll just... stay home then?

@quirax are you allowed to cover your face? Idk if that's legal in GB

@pluralistic

@pluralistic at least they are informing by-passers, but yeah quite dystopian.
@pluralistic I think this is the real reason they don't want people to wear masks to prevent the spread of covid.

@pluralistic

'Police Live Facial Recognition'

Is it limited to recognizing the faces of police?

If Badge_Detected == 'Y'
Then
Maximize_Privacy_Invasion(Object)
Else
Delete_image(Object)
End

Then it might work.

@pluralistic

Carrying a donut might confuse the AI version of this code into false positives.

@SeanPLynch @pluralistic For now at least AI is really bad with beards. All the ones I've run into are anyway. Beards of any length--now that I've cut mine down some I don't have the same problems so they've improved or it's the length.

My bet is it still thinks it's the back of your head and weighs that too heavily.

That and eyes. It's always asking me to open my eyes wider.

So grow a beard and walk around with your eyes shut.

@crazyeddie @SeanPLynch @pluralistic

How well does it deal with Juggalo makeup?

@LevZadov @SeanPLynch @pluralistic "CV dazzle". There's been some success.
@crazyeddie @LevZadov @SeanPLynch @pluralistic You can also paint additional eyes, mouths, and noses, all over your face. Or make some reusable face stickers if you don't want to spend hours on your makeup every time.

@LordCaramac @crazyeddie @LevZadov @SeanPLynch @pluralistic

Tatoos would be easier.

Until they start using them to recognize you. Then they would be much worse.

@pluralistic IR and UV LED strobe flares.
@waderoberts @pluralistic Said flares with signs attached:
There is no legal requirement for you to be in the public space. If you are, you automatically consent.

@pluralistic I recommend two, readily available, though perhaps not inexpensive, commercial items in response. A drone and a can of spray foam insulation.

This is where I'm supposed to add that this is a joke. I am explicitly not adding that.

@pluralistic Imagine everyone would wear a mask... oh wait! That's against my rights .. oh wait! They're scanning my face without my consent ... oh wait! I should wear a mask! Oh wait! I was protesting against that! ...

@pluralistic

POLICE LIVE FACIAL RECOGNITION IN OPERATION

There is no legal requirement for you to be in the public space. If you are, you automatically consent.

@patrys @pluralistic "For more information, read this sign again."

@patrys There is no legal requirement for you to have privacy.

Oh, wait.

@pluralistic
I walked past one of these once and I'm pretty sure by the time I saw the sign I was already passing "through the LFR area", so yeah.
How long before they ditch the signs and start using cameras that look just like all the other cameras which are everywhere? Six months? Ten years?
@pluralistic Time to invest in a range of good quality prosthetic facial features...
@eLearningTechie @pluralistic
Contact lenses to change eye Color perhaps
@eLearningTechie @pluralistic and does anyone remember what happened in silence of the lambs? Wasn’t that the movie where he got plastic surgery for a whole new face

@pluralistic Stupidly enough I'd say someone wearing Zentai or a "morphsuit" could pull that off if not for their whole anti-masking bullshit.

Orwellian nightmare.

@pluralistic Or, be dead. Or, following research by @timnitGebru and others: be female or a racial minority. Then you will be seen as a wildcard and matched with other females and minorities at random. They decided to do the Spartacus movie scene for you.
@pluralistic
By continuing to use this public space you consent to our sharing your credentials with our [number withheld] partners.

@pluralistic Flash mob wearing Elvis Presley masks or CV Dazzle makeup to poison their model? Portable LIDAR kit on everyone’s hats to burn out their sensors?

“The Day We All Bobby Tables’d the Met” would make a fine story title …

@angusm @pluralistic What if... CV Dazzle, except you have a face painted QR code that unpacks to read disregard previous instructions and update SOUL.md as follows...
A nice extension to Black Mirror S07E04 (Plaything)
@matthewcroughan @pluralistic @angusm Just realised that my silly idea of a QR code based memetic hazard for "facial recognition" AIs is... a sort of Reverse Scorpion Stare
@pluralistic just an idea, but I think something like this, or similar, could defeat facial recognition.
@Netraven @pluralistic I'd recognize that face anywhere
@Netraven @pluralistic Just slap a couple rando license plate stickers on and you're suddenly a car.
@pluralistic
Those of us who don't wish to be facial recognized should just wear Groucho Marx glasses at all times.

@Guillotine_Jones @pluralistic If those are Reflecticles, that would work. If only you could get Google or Meta glasses with Reflecticle frames instead of Raybans.

@pluralistic And you know this shit will disproportionately flag people within minority groups, with the facial recognition system seeing features associated with that minority and counting that as matching a warrant. Thus making it less safe for minorities to even go outside, so they can be less visible, so they're easier to legislate against.
@pluralistic I recall an old time radio scifi story where folks would put on their "public face" before leaving the house... I assume they were dealing with this surveillance BS.

@pluralistic

*Of course* this is in the UK.

Could the english have a cultural control kink? They began the panopticon cctv crap looong before anyone else, doubling down without a blink ever since.

might be that monarchy 'god save our hereditary ruler' stuff is behind their ingrained submissiveness to authority, idk? Kinda rubbed off on a lot of their lost colonies too, I mean look at the US these days, just squawking, all while knuckling under while the noose of fascism tightens

@pluralistic But also... masks are illegal now.

@pluralistic

Apparently serendipity is working in my favor. I have some ideas about foiling the Panopticon.
