Essex Police scanned 1.3 million faces in public spaces with live facial recognition. The Cambridge evaluation found that, in the force's operating setting, it identified only around half of the watchlist subjects who passed the cameras, observed demographic differences, and found no statistically significant short-term crime reduction. The ICO also says deployments were paused over identified inaccuracy and bias risks.

If a system is this intrusive, "trust us" is not enough. The burden should be proof, safeguards, transparency, and accountability.

How much biometric surveillance should the public accept when the evidence is this shaky?

Reminder: Its well within your rights to opt-out of facial recognition at US airports. When walking up to the ID check, go right to the attendant and tell them you'd like to opt out and show this printable card if needed.

Now that ICE is in charge of these positions, even more the reason to push back.

"The short version: When you reach the TSA checkpoint and see the camera, say "I'd like to opt out of facial recognition." They'll verify your ID the old-fashioned way. No extra screening. No delay. No attitude. That's it.

The FTC said OkCupid and Match shared nearly 3 million user photos with Clarifai in 2014, along with location and demographic data, without telling users or offering an opt-out. The proposed settlement, filed in federal court, includes no financial penalty and no admission of wrongdoing. It would permanently bar OkCupid and Match from misrepresenting how they collect, use, share, delete, or protect personal data and privacy controls.
