I'm reading a ratty paperback copy of Into Thin Air (with a mysterious fake Jon Krakauer autograph) about a journalist (Krakauer) on a Mt Everett climb that ends in tragedy, and its feeling like a prequel to House of Leaves.

Wouldn't be surprised if Danielewski read this.

Krakauer is very much a Navidson figure, an adventure journalist, his wife isn't happy about his dangerous treks though she's come to uneasily accept that this is who he is, and he's journeying though a liminal environment towards impending doom.

@corbden I've had House of Leaves on my TR list for such a long time, this takes it up a few notches.
(It can be a tough read but in this regard you might also find _Into the Wild_ to be of interest. As part of his process of connecting with his subject, Chris McCandless, Krakauer spends a bit of time explaining How I Got This Way / Why I Got This Assignment. Part of that is a story about a solo climb he did that he told no one about, & on which he almost died several times.)

@FeralRobots I saw a YouTube video about McCandless so I might have to check that out. This just appeared at the bookstore for a dollar. Of course I read his book about Mormon polygamy, Under the Banner of Heaven. (The book is a bit different from the show.)

House of Leaves is a tough read too, but it's for the sake of the art and only in the best way. A truly unique read that sticks with you. Also I didn't realize but the album Haunted by Poe, which I'd listened to many times when it was new, was created by Danielewski's sister and is basically the soundtrack.
