Well, here's where I get off, Evernote.

I've used you for over 14 years but I'm not paying £154.90 to be able to have more than 1000 notes and AI features that I don't want to use.

I'm heading for Joplin, synching with stuff I've already got.

UPDATE: Now looking like Obsidian.

While I say Joplin in the original post, I am open to a few others to try out, so long as they're not US big tech.

I've been trying out Joplin with a few of my Evernote notebooks, and the bigger issue for me is web clipping on mobile at the moment. I tend to clip things like recipe web pages, because they don't stick around forever.

Looking like the switch will be to Obsidian as it's handling my old notes better.

Currently using YARLE to import all my notebooks after an initial test.

Once I've got things set up on desktop, I'll be sorting it out on my Android and then, I'll be saying bye to Evernote and good riddance.

Needed a bit of tinkering to get things set up on Android, but I appear to have Obsidian working on it.

Will be writing a blog post about all this, later on in the week.

It's here!

Hopefully some of you will find this blog useful, and the rest of you will find it entertaining.

@emkingma nice article, I know the feeling. Moved out of Evernote around 2023. Ended up on Obsidian. Thanks for the tip with the media plugin for android.
@klausblog no worries on the tip. It was the one step where I was struggling to find an okay existing guide for my situation, so I figured I should include something in the post once I figured it out.

@emkingma Love reading not just your article, but also the thread leading up to it. Wow, am I glad with this heads up. I'm probably in the same boat as you are, storage wise.

While I did look around for alternatives first time around, I came to the conclusion that actually Evernote still was the best tool for my needs - and kept on using it. Also found the price increase somewhat worth it, as there were real QoL improvements noticeable. But this next price-hike really is out of orbit for me too.

The on beef I remember having with Joplin and Obsidian both - and probably any .md based app - is that they have to have a folder for attachments somewhere, and they all insist on making it visible in the app.

I like attachments to be part of a note *seamlessly* - e.g. with notes on all tax correspondence of one year - and it really takes some getting used to how to do that e.g. in Obsidian.

Also curious to learn which plug-ins you ended up using, would you mind sharing those (specifically the storage and media ones)? Might save me the research there. 😉

@roelant yeah, I definitely prefer attachments just sticking about in the note, as in Evernote.

I'm using only a handful at this time:

Kanban
Editing Toolbar
Iconize
And on Android: Android nomedia

@emkingma That's very helpful, thank you! What did you eventually use/choose to synchronise?

I'm currently looking at syncthing, as I work on basically every platform 🙈 (though primarily on Mac and iOS).

@roelant I'm using Dropbox. With some help with Dropsync on Android.

@emkingma Good luck with your migration off Evernote. I went through it about 10 months ago when my subscription was set to go up 4X or whatever. Like you, I was a longtime user.

I did go with Joplin and it's been working well for me. Lots of people seem to like Obsidian, too. Curious to know how it works out for you.

@girlbandgeek I'm planning to write a blog post this week about some of my experiences.
@emkingma Bear has web clipping, but I’ve not used that aspect much. Apple ecosystem only, but recently launched a web version (which I’ve also not used). Pretty sure I’m not using most of the power of it, in fact, but it’s always worked well in terms of having my notes where I need them!
@dwlt unfortunately I'm in mainly on Android and Windows at the moment.
@emkingma take a look at #tiddlywiki. It's totally customisable, although not entirely out of the box. However, there's a great community that's really reactive to questions and is friendly. It's actively maintained and a new version has just been released. I hope this is interesting. See https://tiddlywiki.com/
