#Finland opens world's longest bridge intended for bicycle riders, pedestrians + mobility device users, and transit riders (no cars allowed!)

#Helsinki's Kruunuvuori Bridge is 1,191 metres long, and will soon be served by trams.

@straphanger
And already a cyclist has been injured because of a large bump in the roadway.

The first accident caused by the bump was reported on Wednesday.

@violanders @straphanger Why is there a bump anyway? Seems like a very minor bump though. With respect to the injured cyclist, was the cyclist not looking ahead?
@scogings
"Was the person not looking ahead?" is a failed approach to traffic safety. People make mistakes and it's the responsibility of the road administration to design roads that allow mistakes such as "not expecting a big bump, big enough to cause a crash, on a brand new road".
@straphanger
@violanders @straphanger Agreed, but anyone in control of a moving vehicle needs to keep eyes on the road ahead to reduce risks of accidents.

@violanders @scogings @straphanger to be honest, if a branch falls in the middle of the road, the city is not liable but only the one who didn't notice.

In transit laws there is "be aware of your surroundings while driving". And yet, some cyclists only keep head down to focus only on their bike, and not on the road.

@epistomai
Sorry, I didn't understand that the bump had fallen from the sky. My bad.
@scogings @straphanger
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Maybe the whole bridge just fell from the sky, so no one needs to be responsible
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Also, further details came through, the cyclist was a 33 year old woman, and her GPS watch showed she was going only 16km/h at the time. So not a reckless speeding male, as everyone probably thinks.
@[email protected] Also has a rather dangerous cycling path, because apparently the designers forgot to think someone would actually use the cycling path :/
@straphanger
Presumably such a no-cars/trucks bridge is much cheaper, because the loads are predictable and much lower. You’re never going to get nose-to-tail traffic jams of trams!
