Microsoft was investing in OpenAI years before most anybody else knew what an LLM was, but what have they done with all that head start? Where is the moat? Where is the expertise? The competitive advantage?

Is there anything that company can't fumble? 😅

@stroughtonsmith just copilot offering to summarize that which should not be summarized… 😅
@stroughtonsmith notepad had a copilot icon though
How many products does Microsoft have named ‘Copilot’? I mapped every one

Update (9 Apr 2026): Another one. A helpful person sent in Microsoft 365 Copilot for US Government. That's 81. Chart updated.

@stroughtonsmith that and Anthropic coming in 10 years after Open AI and caught up, possibly on route to top them.

It’s almost as if the core LLM functionality doesn’t mean as much as those early adopters though and they’ve wasted any chance of an advantage.

@stroughtonsmith I know a thing or two about that, sadly.
@stroughtonsmith I think it did the opposite. In my area (finance) copilot is what’s bundled into our Microsoft office. And copilot as a harness to OpenAI models is so bad, people are dismissing AI entirely just from their copilot experience.
