US jobs too important to risk Chinese car imports, says Ford CEO
China has enough spare capacity to swallow the entire US car market, says Ford's Jim Farley.

@arstechnica they know they'd get eaten alive because china builds things other than $50k+ wankpanzers
@jiub @arstechnica Europe doesn't want those things, Asia doesn't want those things, the Yanks just don't understand any more...

@kkarhan @jiub @arstechnica it's such a ridiculous throwback now, when it used to lead the world....but empires come and go....
@Lazarou @jiub @arstechnica manwhile even #Japan's car manufacturers see the #Enshittufication as unsustainable, and you get stuff like the #HiluxChamp in #Thailand, because people there don't buy a #SuperUselessVehicle to flex but instead as means to get shit done!
@kkarhan @jiub @arstechnica a car should be about getting from A to B, and they ain't brilliant at doing that if everyone else is in a car too.

@Lazarou @jiub @arstechnica every #car is a failure of #PublicTransport, #WalkableCities and #CyclingInfrastruture to accomondate needs.

  • #USA's #Suburbia|n shitholes are bad per design, but aside from those nothing prevents them from having Buses…
@Lazarou @arstechnica yeah the US manufacturers have lost almost all their overseas markets because their product lineup has become increasingly specialized to the US market (and only the highest margin segment of the US market at that)

the US auto industry is going to run into the same issues it ran into in the 70s where its insularity gave it no competitive products in times of high fuel costs. they're probably going to go bankrupt and get bailed out by the US government yet again
@arstechnica free markets for me, not for thee.

@arstechnica says the company that stopped making cars in the US in 2018??

@mochabeau @arstechnica yeah, cuz legally those #SuperUselessVehicles ain't #cars so they can violate #EPA & #RoadSafety standards…

@arstechnica says the company that sells gigantic $80k gas guzzling pickup trucks that no one can afford. All automakers should be terrified of China. They are making compelling EVs that people CAN afford. But let’s not lie that it’s about workers. Ford doesn’t give a damn about workers.
@arstechnica This argument doesn't make sense. So sell us bad cars so that we can afford to pay double for your bad cars so that people have jobs to buy your bad cars?
@arstechnica They're only concerned about US jobs when it's convenient for them.
@arstechnica I wonder how Ford (and all US car makers, to be fair) ended up in this situation

@arstechnica so maybe the (mostly) U.S. car makers shouldn’t have said they were slowing EV production unless that was a lie to placate someone.

If Fird or GM came out something with range at the right price, they have the dealer and repair network in place to do well. They have to play though.

China doesn’t act doubtful about what needs to be done.

@arstechnica have they tried making better cars?
