i have never used an AI customer service chat that was more helpful than the previous deterministic chat bots that regurgitate the FAQ or whatever.
ChatGPT was released to the public four years ago and today i can't think of a single software feature or product that uses it that i would miss if it disappeared today.
@peter I would miss complaining about its existence… does that count? 😅
@andycarolan @peter @patterfloof you'd replace it almost instantly. Not like there's a shortage of stuff to moan about in the modern world.
@chloeraccoon @andycarolan @peter from one Brit to another: there's always the weather :P
@patterfloof @andycarolan @peter ...weather? You call this weather? We got proper weather when I was young. Now you get metrology with a short attention span... ;)

@peter

As many people have already said:

The trillion dollar problem that so called "AI" solves is having to pay workers wages.

@peter the world was better in every way prior to the rise of huge generative ai models
@peter 4 years and we're still waiting to hear of a success 'cos you know they'd never shut up about it.
@peter
Approval. I don't know of any area of life where I would need AI/LLM.
Yes, there is one exception: the translations.
Here they are useful and bring people into communication where it would otherwise not be possible, e.g. here.
But otherwise, I haven't noticed anything good with AI/LLM, rather problematic.
@peter ChatGPT is a Kim Kardassian of software
@synlogic4242 Kim is **way** more popular and profitable

@peter That's not right. ChatGPT was released in November 2022. Which makes it 3 years and some 4 months old, by my human calculation skills.

Before that, there just wasn't a chat interface, but you could use GPT3.

@peter
If that's not success then I don't know what is.
@peter gee and it's been getting smarter all the time too, four solid years of exponential something or other, and so little to show for it
@peter the one good thing: it replaced the moronic bullshit NFT etc craze

@peter for a technology which has supposedly changed the entire trajectory of the human race, it still shocks me how genAI has had zero impact on my life in any way whatsoever (other than messing up the job market because stupid people).

If I didn't talk to other people in my industry and never read any news media, I might not even realize genAI exists!

*Edit:* oh yeah, and the sparkle buttons I always ignore and never click on. 😂

@peter I can think of some software features or products that I miss because they _did_ start using it.

@peter at work we submitted a long form and narrative bid in response to an RFP. Potential client submitted questions they want answered in a presentation/meeting. Ok fine.

In preparation for the meeting, someone internally ran our proposal through AI to generate a list of 30 questions we should be prepared to answer in the presentation. WTF ? Why would I want to read questions that don't make sense?

@peter I can, I'm Blind and use it daily for everything from product identification to colour ID, geo-locating, and describing photos people don't write alt text for.
