Periodical reminder the European Commission runs something called Safety Gate.

It's an easy way to find out whether that niche and/or dodgy thing you bought has been part of an official recall anywhere in the single market.

Apart of branded stuff where the manufacturer made a genuine error there's also the utter crap (often sold by Amazon, don't buy there) like the murderous brush cutter chainsaw attachments that keep popping up.

#EU #europe #tech #safetyish

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors pop up rather frequently btw. And even so most of the shitty ones probably fall through the cracks.

As usual the very large online retailers (Amazon, and the ones like Alibaba even more blatantly shitting on EU consumer rights and small companies) are a large vector for this.

When you go through the effort of installing these, just try to buy something from a reputable large brand that is somewhat widespread in your country.

Example: https://ec.europa.eu/safety-gate-alerts/screen/webReport/alertDetail/10098636?lang=en

Smoke-detector.

"The product is not sensitive enough to detect smoke."

Sold via Amazon, Wish, Shein, Alibaba, Aliexpress

Might be laughable but also there's a lot of people who now have these in their house. It kills people.

It's difficult to enforce stuff on Wish, Shein, Alibaba and Aliexpress (although the EU could / should make advertising these sites illegal) but fricking Amazon ships this shit from EU warehouses. It's infuriating they're never fined for this.

I work for a company fixing stuff after calamities, often fires. The past years we've been to multiple sites where the smoke detectors did not trigger despite massive amounts of smoke.

This is not a thing that happened a decade ago.

Do me a favour and check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors you have at home. When in doubt: replace them.

On the brush cutter chainsaw attachments. Now I hear you: you have an urgent craving, need even, to turn your brush cutter from a microplastic dispenser into a lean & mean dandelion cutting machine.

Don't despair: just buy a murder triangle or murder disk from a reputable manufacturer!

Key factor: it should be a one part item with a hole. Anything with bolted on parts or chain will eventually break and take out your neighbours cat, child or car mirror.

#gardening #technology

And yes in *theory* these chainsaw and bolted on blade attachments can be manufactured to be safe, and to a standard where they won't eventually take out your neighbours cat.

But remember that with all the might of humanities industrial base just a week ago an astronaut popping around the moon said "huh, I have two Outlooks and neither are working".

@Pepijn Take care of your ankles!
@Pepijn and don't forget those "wood carving" angle grinder disks. Let's wrap a chain around a disk that spins at 10000rpm. What could go wrong?
I'm shit scared of angle grinders at the best of times and have seen far too many injuries caused by shattered standard disks, even ones from reputable manufacturers.

@Pepijn
@ReneDamkot Oh? Vertel. 😁 @Pepijn

:')

@Pepijn

@Pepijn

My understanding is that you’re supposed to replace the entire unit (not just the battery) every 10 years. The set I bought recently come with 10 yr non-replaceable batteries. Aging electronics are not iron & steel, and do not last forever.

#SmokeDetectors

@Pepijn
Our smoke detector routinely goes off when we are broiling meat in the oven, if we don't turn on the overhead fan first. But one time we accidentally set a cloth pot-holder on fire on the new stove, and there was literally visible smoke throughout the house, and it did _nothing_. So it's sensitive, but to the wrong things.
@Pepijn Do you have any recommendations for smoke detectors? Existing law in Poland will make them mandatory In few years time, but even before that I am thinking of buying and installing one in my apartment.

@ThePolishDispatch If possible get a wired product, and a networked one at that (all detectors go off at the same time). It's just more reliable.

The market for good quality is very much a local one with brands often limited to countries or regions. So I don't have specific recommendations.

@Pepijn If a local distributor, advertising on local platforms, indicates that the product was Made in China would that be a red flag in light of your earlier alibaba comment?
@ThePolishDispatch Not directly. Most of the good ones are also manufactured in China. I'd look for recommendations from a local consumer advice organisation as this is the type of product they have opinions about.
@ThePolishDispatch sorry for butting in, but I went down this rabbit hole a while back. FireAngel from the UK ended up being my choice
@tal Great! And they are available in PL!
