You don't need to pirate if you want to own your media and self-host Jellyfin #homelab

Here's my guide: https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2022/how-i-rip-dvds-and-blu-rays-my-mac-2022-edition/

@geerlingguy big tech ai companies 'pown' about 100x and used it to train their models, they may underestimate rsj is all that i am sayin #piece of your action #tithe
@geerlingguy very timely, Jeff! Thank you for the primer!

@geerlingguy I did a rip of my Series 1-5 DVDs of Doctor Who a while back.

I definitely want to rip through the Blu-Rays (including some of the 14th and 15th Doctor Blu-Rays I imported from the UK) at some point, but definitely need more storage space on one of my NASes.

@qlp @geerlingguy It is such a good feeling once you own your media and run it from your server.
@SamuraiSakura @geerlingguy Absolutely! It helped a lot when I traveled for work since I had copies of the file on a portable hard drive and took it with me.
@geerlingguy
I fully intend to do this at some point when I can afford the hardware. For now, I just directly host all my music files in lossless on my PC directly, and I manually watch Blu-Rays on a dedicated player.
@geerlingguy I found this guide really helpful when I started ripping a few years ago. Thank you!
@geerlingguy
I like owning my stuff so I tried to purchase my music, but sadly most artists seem to only offer their work as a subscription now, so I'm no longer listening to those as I canceled Spotify a while back. It's sad. I hope that the same doesn't apply to movies.
@geerlingguy
I may be late to the party but holy shit Jellyfin is great! I just started using it a couple of weeks ago and I'm thouroughly impressed!
@geerlingguy Why do you need to edit the metadata?
@negative12dollarbill I used to since it was the best way to make sure it was correct but now I name the file so Jellyfin can pick up the right metadata
