@sternecker When I was a kid, we got invited for dinner. The first dish was half a pear topped with whipped cream. I thought it was weird to start with dessert, but I dug in. It was not whipped cream but Roquefort mousse. Since then, I didn’t like blue cheese.

When I was 30, there was surprise bread at a PhD defence apéro. I picked a piece filled with herbs cream cheese. It was not herbs cream cheese but blue cheese. Since then, I like blue cheese.

Oscar Wilde reckoned you should always try everything twice*, just in case you're wrong the first time.

(* except incest and country dancing)

@oscherler @sternecker @alice When I was a kid my dad’s business partner (a coked up 80s douche bro) invited us to a fancy dinner to celebrate a big sale. There was a dish of ice cream on the table when we arrived and I asked, “Who ordered ice cream before dinner?! Can I have some?” “Sure kid, enjoy,” said Mr. Douche Bro. Friends, it was a nice ice cream shaped scoop of butter. I gagged. They had a nice laugh at my expense.

I hated blue cheese as a kid because my only experience with it was my mother baking frozen fish bricks tipped with it. The whole thing was nasty.

Once I experienced wings, I liked it.

@w_b @oscherler @sternecker @alice I hated blue cheese as a kid. Every 5 or 10 years I try it again just in case my taste pallet changed and every time I spit it out and cuss

@old_angry_queer @w_b @oscherler @sternecker @alice I'm the same - I've never liked blue cheese. Occasionally I try it, it turns out I still don't like it. Oh well, there are so many kinds of cheese I do like, that I don't feel I'm missing out. #tellAlice
@old_angry_queer @sternecker @oscherler @alice @w_b this is me with pickled beetroot. It still tastes like a mouthful of dirt.

I like to try things I don't like from time to time because there's lots of things I love now that I used to hate. Pickled beetroot I don't think will ever be for me. Though once a year I try it again anyway.

I used to drink tea and coffee saturated with sugar. Until I was around 18, then my palate did change and I've drunk them black, no sugar ever since. I guess I became a bitter man.

P.S. I love blue cheese.

This English practice of putting sugar in tea I found so weird the first time I saw someone do it I was quite rude with a "whaaaat?"

But my own funny story.

I grew up in a Chinese restaurant family in Canada. Lots of our customers were from the nearby Jewish community.

My parents had a great relationship with many of them and while I did my homework in the corner, some would talk to me and tell me all sorts of stuff. I learnt a lot about Jewish culture and dad always said they were very similar to our culture and point to filial piety as proof.

I thought I knew everything I needed to know about Judaism.

Imagine my shock when I moved to the big city and met Jewish people outside of our Chinese restaurant and discovered they didn't eat pork.

I absolutely love blue cheese, but I am horrified by that.
