I want to give you a small preview of the next feature release for #Bikerouter today:

There will be a built-in route manager where you can manage your planned routes.

This feature breaks with Bikerouter’s “everything lives in the browser” paradigm: routes will be stored on Bikerouter’s servers, and a user account will be required.

However, this is designed in a privacy-friendly way and does not require an email address or other personal information. The feature is also optional and can simply be ignored if you’re not interested.

I’ll gradually share more details, but for now, here’s just a screenshot (which may differ from the final released version as there’s still a lot in flux).

The currently planned route can be saved at any time in the new Route Manager of #Bikerouter.

You can use a folder structure to organize your routes and routes can be moved freely between folders at any time.

All parameters of the planned route are stored, so it can be restored at any time. Custom/adjusted routing profiles are also supported!

A route can have a name and an optional description, both of which are searchable.

Even more privacy-friendly than an account that requires no personal information is storing routes directly in your browser without an account involved at all.

So there will be two options for storing routes:

  • Bikerouter Storage (server-side)
  • Browser Storage (local, on device)
  • Bikerouter Storage offers all features, while Browser Storage is limited by design.

    With an account, the Route Manager lets you access your routes across all your devices: For example, plan on your computer at home and access the route on your smartphone while on the go.

    With Browser Storage on the other hand, you can only access routes saved on that specific device.

    Route preview images are only available when using Bikerouter Storage.

    Both options will support route export and import.

    @bikerouter Thank you for giving us the option to choose!
    @bikerouter holy shit 🫨💪👌🥁
    @bikerouter I'm getting impatient: When we can first testsaveroute? 🙃😝
    @ff7 I'm putting in more effort than I initially anticipated, working hard to push this beyond my usual “ship at 80%” standard toward 90% or even 95% completion this time. Since I'm already in the fine-tuning phase, the release shouldn't be far off.

    @bikerouter ich find das so mega genial umgesetzt!!! Wirklich danke dafür!

    Was anderes zur Info: Seit einigen Wochen werden bei mir die Tiles von openstreetmap.org nicht immer geladen - meiner kurzen Recherche nach vermutlich wegen des nun verschärft umgesetzten Scraper-Schutzes.

    @ff7 Das ist mit Sicherheit ein Problem, welches von deinem Browser erzeugt wird, denn sowohl `Referer`- als auch `User-Agent`-Header werden vom Browser gesetzt. Eventuell hast du Browser-Extensions aktiv, die hier eingreifen.
    @mjaschen ah - ja das ist gut möglich. Diese Ebene der Ursache hatte ich noch nicht bedacht. Danke!
    @mjaschen @ff7 danke für den Hinweis. Das Problem hatte ich auch schon mit anderen Seiten.

    @fabzgy
    dieser Haken hat's für mich gerichtet.
    Cache leeren könnte acuh helfen, weil noch (ohne Cache leeren?) sind ein paar reloads in den verschiedenen Zoom-Stufen notwendig.

    @mjaschen

    @bikerouter That's an awesome feature! I'm really looking forward to it!
    @bikerouter
    It´s getting hot in here 👍
    @bikerouter
    Ok, let´s get serious; now we have a user profile, we got folders and structures.
    I plan an big 2000km muiltiday holiday route, i´m done and happy with it... but:
    A feature to split this big beautifull multiday route (SNCR) into multiple day tracks for my navigation and storing them thogether with the untouched orignial route in the folder.. just dreaming? 😎

    @f_md1 Splitting routes at waypoints is already possible, so you can achieve this, even if it might not be exactly what you described.

    Workflow would be: plan route → split at first stage destination (“Split route to here”) → now you've got your first stage as separate route → save route.

    @bikerouter
    Hello,
    Ist the new Route Manager online? Where can i find it?
    @HorstM It's not available yet.

    @bikerouter

    How about publishing Bikerouter’s source code so others can review it and also to ensure the tool doesn’t end up in enshittification or disappearing altogether?

    @bikerouter
    🥳🥳🥳 YESSSS!!!
    and folders! I see folders!!! 🤩🤩🤩

    #Bikerouter

    @bikerouter Wäre eine Lösung bei der man Lokale files hat nicht besser. Also ich lade mir eine Datei rein und kann die bearbeiten inkl. AutoSave?

    Dann brauchts nichts auf dem Server und auch kein Login.

    Ich arbeite auch gerade an einem Fork bei dem ich das genau so mache.

    @bikerouter
    Presumably this feature will also make it possible for people to save their own customised routing profiles and share routes created using those customised routing profiles. (As per "User Defined" in the screenshot).
    @bikerouter Das sind gute Nachrichten. Ich vermisse das Abspeichern schon etwas.
