Latent Image is the clear winner tonight, but a LOOOONG mile. Such a great idea with great performances. Definitely the best of Trek.

@MisophonicSpree @MirrorAyako @startrek

Yea. I like that one too. Great story all around.

Voyager is a great series. So many superb episodes to choose from.

@MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek

I feel like it's below TNG and DS9 for quality, but it has a certain something that puts it even with those two for my enjoyment. Not exactly sure what that something is, but it's there.

There's outstanding episodes of course, with this being one, but I feel like there's fewer of them than in TNG & DS9. Dunno, subjective I guess, but VOY does rock. I love Janeway :^)

#AllStarTrek

@lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek I agree. Voyager may have been slightly behind on the story front (mainly due to external factors)... But a large majority of the cast and crew treated it like an opportunity of a lifetime and gave it their all anyway.
@arazil @lxskllr @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
Yeah all these things are objective. I think that VOY has a great hit rate. I think it's first season was WAY better than TNG's first season. Which makes sense because TNG was restarting after a long break and VOY had a better budget in the first year.
@MisophonicSpree @arazil @lxskllr @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
We are just about to complete our watch-through on DVD, doing 2-3 episodes a night. A few days ago, when folks were doing their top 5 list, mine was more like top 15. While there are some turkeys, like with every series, #VOY does such a good job of letting actors explore their characters to the extremes, especially the last few seasons.
@ColesStreetPothole @arazil @lxskllr @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
The thing that I wish for for Voyager is a bit more continuity. There was a /little/ continuity but mostly the stories were forgotten in any subsequent episode. But that's how they did TV back then.

@MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @arazil @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek

VOY and ENT were the Treks that least lived up to their potential. I think it was mainly due to studio meddling. They only gave lip service to 'lost in space' and 'first in space'. I think the shows would've been more interesting if they stuck with the showrunner's vision.

@MisophonicSpree @arazil @lxskllr @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
I think they floundered in the first few seasons. They established the series premise and got Delta quadrant established, but struggled with the characters; they made up for that later on.

There is also a structural challenge—Voyager was always leaving things behind, mostly only the folks on the ship could be developed.

@ColesStreetPothole @arazil @lxskllr @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
Yeah the Kazon weren't the best baddies ever? They have stolen spaceships but they can't make their own water? Something doesn't track.

@MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @arazil @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek

Yea, I don't know how those idiots even figured out how to fly a ship. If a ship dropped in my backyard, I wouldn't know what to do with it. Probably kill myself trying to take off :^D

#AllStarTrek

@lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek "Lost in space with a ship we can't fly" was actually the original premise of the short lived "Stargate Universe" spin off series.

@arazil @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek

Haven't seen that one. Been thinking about giving Stargate another try. Not sure when that'll happen. Haven't been quite in the mood for video recently.

#AllStarTrek

@lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek It was so bad that, by early season 2, they retconned a new species in (the Trabe) to explain why the Kazon were so stupid and dysfunctional.

@arazil @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek

The Kazon stuck around quite awhile also. For as derpy as a group they were, they occupied a lot of territory :^D

#AllStarTrek

@lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek That was another flaw in the original Voyager premise... In order to do the premise right, the show needed to constantly switch up the baddie roster as the ship moved closer to home. I don't think that Paramount's executives were ready or willing to part with the budget required to really pull that off in the last 1990s.

@arazil @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek

I think they could've pulled it off on budget if they worked more with a failing ship and low supplies. Also the Maquis. The threat doesn't *have* to be external.

#AllStarTrek

@lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek I would have preferred it if they took their time in the delta quadrant and then had one big jump back towards the end of series. In my opinion, that framing would have better sold the vastness of the area. Plus that treatment would have opened the door to more character exploration episodes featuring themes such as "Starfleet vs. Marquis" and "Diplomacy vs. Survival."
@arazil @lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
I'd be happy if they just didn't pair Seven of Nine with Chakotay! 🙄 Toss Harry a bone for not getting promoted all series, at least.
@ColesStreetPothole @lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek The Doctor was the most obvious and logical pairing. I could definitely see Harry though and that would give his character some much needed attention and development. Chakotay was just too out of left field to be believable.

@arazil @lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
Yeah, that's what I alluded to before—leaving the previous episode's characters behind meant the show had more of a "monster/situation of the week" vibe than DS9 did, or even than TNG.

That said, the monster/situation of the week episodes were some of Voyager's best, particularly later in the series.

@arazil @lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
For instance, I think Night is spectacular. Great premise, great new alien concepts, great costumes.
@ColesStreetPothole @lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek I always liked the 7th season "reboot" episode, "The Void." I feel it's a microcosm of what the writers originally wanted out of the series before reality dictated otherwise.

@arazil @lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek Yes, we just watched The Void! It has so much! A new space phenomenon, a new species, and a plot that causes the main characters to clash as they try to resolve things! And I giggled with glee when Janeway said "Welcome to the Alliance!" 😂

FWIW, I just had to add this picture from Night. Look at this intelligent raisin! Such a great appearance!

@arazil @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek

Oh, and the Borg joke about them being too worthless to assimilate! That was pretty funny, but the Kazon would've at least made good tactical drones. Not like they have to think. The collective would be doing the thinking for them.

@MisophonicSpree @arazil @lxskllr @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek
Those overgrown Oompah Loompahs were so annoying. Seska was great, though.
@ColesStreetPothole @MisophonicSpree @lxskllr @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek I think that the premise of Voyager and Enterprise would have done better in a later era or under different leadership. The lack (and later refusal) of serialization really killed the original concept behind those two series right from the start.

@ColesStreetPothole @MisophonicSpree @arazil @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek

That might be /that something/ I dig. You really get to know the characters in VOY. It all feels really "personal".

This isn't very recent, though something like this went around last year. Wang talks about Berman instructing the actors playing human characters to "underplay" their roles.

Garrett Wang Talks Clashes With Brannon Braga & Rick Berman + Lost Opportunity For Star Trek Voyager Movie

Star Trek Voyager has been off the air for a decade, but actor Garrett Wang still has some issues with how the show was run, and how it was ended. In a new interview the Ensign Kim actor reveals how he feels about decisions made by show producers Brannon Braga and Rick Berman, including not getting a chance to be on the big screen.   Wang on Berman, Braga and no Voyager feature film Garrett Wang spoke to the official Star Trek site about his life today and his life on board the USS Voyager for seven seasons as Ensign Harry Kim. He was very candid about some of his issues with the show, starting off with the whole perpetual Ensign thing, saying: Kim was probed, beaten, tortured and held the distinction of being the first Voyager crew member to die and come back to life. What more does a guy have to do to get promoted to Lieutenant for frak’s sake? To add further insult to injury, other crew members such as Tuvok (Russ) and Paris were being promoted, demoted and then re- promoted throughout the seven-year run of Voyager. I’m not trying to be negative here; just saying it like it is. During the fourth season, I called writer/producer Brannon Braga and asked him why my character hadn’t received a promotion yet. His response? “Well, somebody’s gotta be the ensign.” Geez, thanks. Thanks for nothing. But Wang doesn’t just have a bone to pick with Brannon Braga, the actor also recalls a strange direction he received from show producer Rick Berman, saying: When casting ended on Voyager, all the actors were invited by executive producer Rick Berman to attend a congratulatory luncheon. It was during this lunch that Berman informed us that he expected all actors portraying human roles to follow his decree. He told us that we were to underplay our human characters. He wanted our line delivery to be as military — and subsequently devoid of emotion — as possible, since this, in his opinion, was the only way to make the aliens look real. My first thought was, “That’s not right! What the heck was Berman talking about? Was he pulling our legs? The human characters shouldn’t be forced to muffle their emotions. We were human, not androids!” Wang goes on to say that he believes his revealing some of his concerns to a TV Guide reporter early in Voyager’s run "sealed the death" of any chance of him getting to direct an episode, noting "I was the first actor in Star Trek history to be denied the chance to direct." Garrett Wang wishes Kim got promoted from Ensign (L), but he did get to be a captain in an alternate time line (R) at least Like some actors from Star Trek: Enterprise, Wang seems to have issues with Voyager’s crew not getting the chance to get to the big screen (like the original Star Trek and Next Generation before). Here is Wang’s suggestion for a better version of Voyager’s finale: If I was running Star Trek: Voyager, what I would have done is keep the first hour exactly the way it was and, the second hour, I would have taken the same kind of pacing as the first hour and then ended it with a caption on screen saying, “To be continued at a theater near you.” Then I would have done a two-hour feature film. For much more from Wang, read the full interview: Part 1 and Part 2. And for even more Wang, Syfy.de has released another clip of Wang from Fedcon XX, this time talking about lessons learned on location for Star Trek: Voyager.
