Who are your favourite contemporary Indigenous / Native American / First Nations writers (including poets) based in Canada and the US?

I'm not looking for search engine results. I'm asking who /you/ read and enjoy. I'm especially interested in replies from Indigenous people.

Joy Harjo, Louise Erdritch and Julian Brave Noisecat are high on my list. Who's on yours?

[Please do not recommend Sherman Alexie. If you don't know why, look him up.]

@ShaulaEvans Tanya Tagaq
@Geoffberner I just found out that she has the same agent as my sister-in-law! Which gives me hope that I might get to meet her one day (in a post-pandemic world, may we all live that long).
@ShaulaEvans
Ofelia Zepeda is not just a wonderful poet, but she is a tireless advocate for reviving the Tohono O'odham language.
@extraspecialbitter I'm so excited to learn about her. Thank you!
@ShaulaEvans
Agree, Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Robin Wall Kimmerer are all frequent re-reads lately for me too. Usually I read from the library to save money, but I bought my own copy of "Braiding Sweetgrass", I love it so much. N. Scott Momaday is also good, although it's been awhile since I last read him, (reminds me I need to revisit).

@CommonSparrow

Seconded, Louise Erdrich is probably the greatest writer of my lifetime.

@ShaulaEvans

@CommonSparrow Kimmerer and Momaday are new names for me. Thank you!
@ShaulaEvans Leanne Betasamosake Simpson's Noopiming is one of my favourite novels.
@heyther I'm excited to learn about her. Thank you!
@ShaulaEvans I recently read To The Moon and Back by Eliana Ramage and thought it was really good, I'll definitely be looking out for her future books https://www.draliceviolett.com/blog-tour-to-the-moon-and-back

@ShaulaEvans I'm a settler and I think I already saw a few of these in the replies, but: Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Billy-Ray Belcourt, Tanya Tagaq, and Waubgeshig Rice. Also Jessica Johns, though she just has one book out so far (Bad Cree).
@ShaulaEvans Waubgeshig Rice, the Treuer brothers, Erdrich, James Welch, adam fortunate eagle, Tommy orange, Deloria (father and son), Beth Piatote, Morgan talty, Leslie silko, frank Busch, and sterling harjo are some of my favorites.
@ShaulaEvans Richard Wagamese is one of my favourite authors. I've read four or five of his novels, all amazing.
@ShaulaEvans @ahimsa_pdx If kids books count, I would add Julie Flett, Monique Gray Smith, and Richard Van Camp :)

@ShaulaEvans @ahimsa_pdx

I agree with @beandreams on the kids books. Im currently blanking on more good ones but they exist.

My Ponca friend Cliff Taylor has a book or two, one is called "Memory of Souls".

Oddly my contributions that come to mind are scholarly

- The Indigenous Paleolithic of the Western Hemisphere By Paulette F. C. Steeves
- George Sword's Warrior Narratives by Delphine Red Shirt

the latter has other books I've not read.

@shoshin @ShaulaEvans @ahimsa_pdx @beandreams

Bringing up kids books made me remember 2 YA authors I enjoyed reading very much last year:
Darcie Little Badger and Angeline Boulley

@ShaulaEvans i haven't seen anyone mention Eden Robinson yet, so i will

@ShaulaEvans Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Jessica Johns,
Dr. Jessica Hernandez

I believe adrienne maree brown and Autumn Brown are Indigenous as part of their mixed-race Black heritage but that’s just memory from their podcast and might not be right

@ShaulaEvans I’ll just give a further thumbs up on Joy Harjo. Many years ago she gave a talk at my university to promote An American Sunrise and it’s still one of my favorite books of poetry.
