I'm rubbish at ID'ing flies, & the best I can do here is suggest that it's a root-maggot fly (family Anthomyiidae) of some kind.

But more importantly, it was mostly (but not quite) still, so I got the chance to make an 11-image macro stack, & then try the new, free Shine Stacker software.

Not bad for a first go – will experiment some more.

You can easily see the places where the stack hasn't worked and needed retouching – the fly moved its legs after seven frames, but they were helpful to bring the wings into focus, so I stuck with them.

Again, hopefully I'll be able to do better if the insects would only think of the poor photographer & stay still a bit longer 🤷‍♂️
