I keep encountering, online and off, people who believe if an unethical tech becomes functional enough, that will make all the naysayers abandon their concerns and start using

That is, if LLMs become good enough then surely we will look past the deception, violations, abuse, and extremist politics?

@baldur ‘…if an unethical tech becomes functional enough, that will make all the naysayers abandon their concerns and start using…’

Many already use it. Perhaps less will when it becomes obvious that neither LLMs nor the corporate handlers and their coders have any interest in anyone’s wellbeing and flourishing? Hence the tech monopolies and antitrust doublespeak of Artificial Intelligence. The Artificial and Automated control of Information processing has only served the acceleration of inequality and injustice so a very few can profit from advanced weapons tech, surveillance, essential resources depletion and IP theft. The idea of HAL that would serve the general well being and flourishing of the people was never the intention! #HAL #AdaptiveAlgorithms #ArtificialInformation #Ai #IPTheft #IP #CyberneticWar #WW3 #CyberneticWarfare https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Cybernetics+and+Surveillance%3a+The+Secret+Police+Enter+the+Computer...-a0715686056

@baldur The Netflix series ‘Persons of Interest’ considers the possibility of eliminating any back doors to a HAL like machine. The paradoxes of such an idea are easily resolved by recognising the limits of its science. None can transcend the absolute idea. Even an absolute being is just the partial intelligibility of the absolute idea, although a spurious comprehension of what an idea is. #HueristicAdaptiveLogic #HAL #Ai #PersonsOfInterest #TheMachine #Philosophy

@Dialectician @baldur

In Generative AI (LLM) arguments I'm in the "ignoring all other concerns …" camp, in that I argue that, in objectively measured reality, the LLMs do not produce much value, if any, and often negative, and that they are expensive and must become much more so.

So if we had sensible decision making, based on reliable objective data, we'd reject this "AI" just based on the above.

But hype and faith and addition are dominating. Rationality has been abandoned.

@Dialectician @baldur

*EACH ONE* of those "other concerns" should individually, in isolation, cause rational caring people to abandon and forbid (outlaw) much of what is currently being done.

But we're trapped in social, political, corporate structures that embrace externalizing costs as a smart move for personal gain, ignoring the harms to society, our neighbors, and the human race.
