The first full version of my #Berlin subway map is done. It needs tuning now. A key (legend) and I think I want to implement the ABC-fair zones (as to further emphasize the shape of the bear). I *might* include regular rail lines, too. But I kinda like it like this. What say you? #transit #map
@sebvandenbrink Being intimately familiar with the network here, I must say I love the look of it, even if it confuse me after seeing the normal ones for the last 10 years.
@ainmosni Hey that's a great compliment! Thank you. Would it be (even) better if I include the regular rail lines, too? And should I write "strasse" or "straße"?

@sebvandenbrink Most Berliners would be confused by adding the train lines, as they tend to not be considered as "of the city", but visually, I can't say.

I do have a strong opinion that if you can use an ß, you should, as it's a very cool looking letter.

@ainmosni Thanks! Good to know about the trainlines. Are there any grammatical rules about the ß? I did use it in another labels, so its a bit inconsistent of me not to use in the streetnames, isn't it? :D
@sebvandenbrink Honestly, outside of not using it as the first letter, I don't really get the rules, even after 10 years of living here. There's a street/station called "Beusselstraße", no idea why the first "ss" is not an ß...
@ainmosni @sebvandenbrink I think it’s because it was named after a person whose name was spelled like that.
@ainmosni @sebvandenbrink it's a remnant from the older german font-styles where writing "sz" looked like "ß", and i think we should/could slowly phase it out 🤷‍♀️

@malte @sebvandenbrink I’m going to disagree on the phasing out part, I think it’s a great looking letter (especially in the font used on street signs here) and adds uniqueness to how the language is written.

As an immigrant here, there’s lots of things in German that I think could be simplified, but the ß is really not confusing enough to be worth losing its uniqueness over.

@sebvandenbrink Looks like A map you have to get used to to apriciate, but that was also for the famous London Underground map.

When the circles reflect the city, it should work (and probably will).

@vosje62 Well it's a bit of a novelty map, honestly. I think the official map is doing fine (although I have my notes about that, too). This is mostly just a bit of fun, really.
@sebvandenbrink
Pleas cut the "w" out of "Warschauer Straße" 😉
Very nice work. 🙂
I think you should work on the position of "Wartenberg" relative to the station "Pankow". Wartenberg ends up more in the North than you positioned it.
@sebvandenbrink would love to understand more about your process for how you decide where to place things given a certain "mold". have you done this by hand?
@rosano It's definitely hand-mate (digitally). No AI involved ;) Of course the stations and crossings need to roughly align with reality. Otherwise where the lines go and how they bend is where I take most liberties, it's very much a novelty map. But I want it to be correct - as much as possible - too :)
@sebvandenbrink i have to say that i like https://www.berlintransitmap.de/en/ better, but the bear is cute!
New Berlin rapid transit route map

New Berlin rapid transit route map

@malte That new map does seem to improve some things, but it also throws up new things that I would not agree with. My map is more of a novelty map, not a serious attempt at making the map "better." If I were to do that, it would look different.
