It's difficult for me to talk calmly about companies that are excited to spend hundreds of millions of dollars training stochastic models while the teachers in every public classroom in North America pay for their own chalk, some of their students' school supplies and some fraction of their students' lunches out of their own pockets. That those companies go on to say this will make the teachers "obsolete" is too much.
"We need a sovereign AI strategy!" Fuck that and fuck you. If you don't have an every child sleeps in a warm bed under a safe roof and studies on a full stomach strategy, if you don't have an everyone who wants an education can have one strategy - and you can have all of those for one percent of your sovereign AI strategy - your sovereign AI strategy is worth nothing.
"We spent only ten billion dollars training a machine and now it can unreliably do a thing we never spent a goddamn cent training humans to do" fuck that and fuck you. "But I'm so much more productive" you know what you're participating in and what it costs the world and who you're enabling and fuck that and fuck you. "But I'm so much more productive" no you're fucking not, and even if you were fucking listen to yourself, listen to what you're saying. Look at the world you're building. Fuck you.
"I'm so much better at making my made up number look like my company's made up numbers now that instead of understanding what I'm doing I can just argue with the machine that turns rainforests into javascript until I give up and click Y a lot I just don't understand why I'm sad and tired all the time" fucking listen to yourself. Look at what you are doing and listen to yourself doing it for just one goddamn minute. Where is your fucking self respect? Fuck everything about this and fuck you.
"We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us" except you're not shaping these tools except when you let them steal the work you've already shared with humans that they took from you for nothing and you're letting them shape you into someone that accepts their own humiliation in exchange for today's dopamine and this quarter's KPIs and a tomorrow made of ashes, and you're just lying down in the snow, clicking Y and waiting until it feels warm after a while? No. Fuck that and fuck you.
@mhoye please come to my bar so we can shout at each other about this
@barsoomcore @mhoye please tell me where your bar is. I want to join in the shouting.

@kmmich in Toronto, at Dundas and and Brock.

@barsoomcore ah. I'm in Belgium, so Toronto may be a bit far :/ Would love to visit though. I'll keep it in mind.
Maybe if we both dig a hole in the ground in the right direction, our shouts can reach in the middle?
@mhoye "this is more scaleable because once you train a model it's done forever" they say as they advertise for the 5th billion dollar model they've released this year.
@kevingranade @mhoye and demand more power and land for more datacenters to do even bigger and more costly training

Stop Gen AI – Mutual Aid and Political Activism

@mhoye I just saw someone on the Humblebrag platform say that he used Claude to write a 20-page academic article over a weekend that “was surprisingly good“ albeit that it produced no original thought and lots of people said how great this was because it would make them so much more productive and as an academic who truly loves the slow work of digging deep and developing new ideas I‘m wondering when this obsession with fast food research became a thing and also I want to retire now.
@TheCybermatron Just think of how nutritious the slop in the dumpster behind the grocery store must be. It has all the ingredients of food in it.

@mhoye It's even more insulting when one of the AI boosters makes a great show of waffling, in some public appearance or press release, about whether their slop machine might be conscious or not.

They treat so many real actual human beings as worse than animals, but they're fretting about whether their gibberish-machines have a soul? Uh-huh. I feel like there's some kinship here with evangelical Christian drivel about abortion and how this is supposedly "killing babies". Bloodthirsty, murderous Christians suddenly worry about protecting "life" when it's vague and insubstantial...

@mhoye It is arguably an attack on cognition itself. Hinton expresses guilt. Chomsky points out why it can't work.
Es to nolasīju kā neieguldīšanu darbinieku apmācībās. Īpaši ASV sistēmā, kur visi ņem kredītus studijām.
@mhoye but then how will they crush the non-USA programmer working class? gotta step on us all simultaneously or else some of us might escape
@mhoye If your sovereign AI strategy isn't making AI companies pay the full market value for any work taken for training data and making them pay yearly until it is removed from datasets, fining any AI company severely and prosecuting their employees for illegal actions and using any monies gathered to help the poor and subsidise science, education and the arts, and to create laws to force image and video generators to watermark deepfakes or to be able to answer yes or no if something came from their system to crack down on revenge porn and political meddling from the likes of Elon, then your strategy is worthless and you should be in charge of nothing.
@mhoye every time Ursula von der Leyen mentions in a public speech that the EU is behind on AI I start cheering loudly and open a good bottle to toast
@mhoye b-b-but we need the AI singularity to solve the problem of how we’ll pay for all those warm beds and meals, so we must shovel absolutely every dollar, person, and planetary resource into its unfillable gullet for as long as it takes to come true!
@mhoye and universal healthcare
