So my 8yo daughter might be #NeuroDivergent, in particular #autism, we're still finalizing studies. Where can I find good material about how to tell her?

@mdione try the hashtag # actuallyAutistic and the group @ [email protected] to reach more people on here.

Your question lacks enough context to give a good answer. How old is your daughter? How impacted is she by her autism? (it's a wide spectrum!) How much does she already know (you're talking tests, so I assume you've talked about what those were for?)

My answer would probably go in the direction of not so much "telling her that she's autistic", but talking about ideas to improve your everyday life based on that knowledge, and talking about how other people are different and how that might affect her.

@mdione although autism gets diagnosed, many autistics argue that it's a fundamental part of what and how they *are*, not a "disease that you have". I would make that the basis of how you talk about it. You're different from the majority, so what "everybody" assumes how to live your life might not apply to you. But there are many others like you.
@lizzard @mdione
To expand on what lizzzzard wrote, and combine it with your request, if you think it would help, I wrote a children's story that explains this concept (called Neurodiversity):

@murdoc @mdione this is a beautiful story! Thanks for sharing. It's good even without the disability angle.

@lizzard yes, I understand that part, the Fedi has taught me lots about it. TBH, the diagnostic part is more so we an get some extra help at school.

I have personally always told her that she doesn't have to be like everybody else, fishing from my own experience as a kid and teenager. I'm trying to help her live with her friends and colleagues with some tips and ideas, but I'm not really good at that myself.

@mdione I would like to recommend Daniela Schreiter's ( @Fuchskind ) book "the world beyond my shadow". She is an autistic German author and illustrator, and fortunately this one of her books is translated into English as well. I know it has helped many to read it with their kids. https://shop.autorenwelt.de/products/the-world-beyond-my-shadow-bd-1-a-life-with-autism-von-daniela-schreiter?variant=32716365627485
The World Beyond My Shadow

@mdione well, um, let me be pedantic for a moment (it's how we roll).

she already knows. she just doesn't know what being like her is _called_.
