Philz CEO orders removal of flags from stores, including pride flags, to create an ‘inclusive experience’

Once a local gem, the private equity-owned coffee chain has pissed off staff and patrons with its anti-LGBTQ request

@divya Well, that does it for me! Thanks for the bummer news, Divya. /gen

@divya getting rid of queer representation to "work towards a more inclusive experience" is utter bullshit.

@caroline

@alice @divya exactly, this is the goose meme of “more inclusive for who? MORE INCLUSIVE FOR WHO MOTHERFUCKER???”

@caroline Great. I read your CW in Captain America's voice.

@alice @divya

@alice @divya @caroline And even putting on my "soulless capitalist" hat for a second .... who removes a pride flag from the SF location? And not just San Francisco, but in the Castro District? Talk about not understanding your customers!

This is one of those decisions that is so utterly stupid it makes no sense from any perspective.

@divya The cause of this, like so many businesses before it, is buried 8 paragraphs deep:

Philz…was sold to Los Angeles-based private equity firm Freeman Spogli for $145 million in August of last year.

Private equity are a cancer. Everything they touch dies.

@paco @divya Yeah, I noted that. So gross. Is coffee the new target of these vultures?
@spiegelmama @divya Nothing is sacred. They’re doing dentists, funeral homes, you name it. Buy it up, tear it apart, let it fail. Lather, rinse, repeat. Red Lobster and Toys R Us are other classic examples.
@paco @divya Notoriously, that's what happened to the newspaper industry. Absolute depravity.
@spiegelmama @paco @divya and same folks who bought the newspapers are "flipping" the Greyhound stations (literally, same folks who destroyed my local paper bought up and sold the local Greyhound station). Buses suck but at least you used to be able to sit out of the weather and have a restroom to use, now last time I got a bus there, I had to wait 6 hours under an awning in below freezing with no bench and no restroom cause the gas station nearby closed at 10 pm.

@paco @divya

Well on the bright side, since it was sold to private equity the quality will be going down and making avoiding it easier

@gbargoud @paco @divya They weren't just sold to private equity, though.

They sold to private equity while not paying out any of their employee-owners.

They just invalidated the stock owned by there employees.

@ajroach42 @paco @divya

That is terrible. I would ask "how is that even allowed" but I suspect the answer is "it's not but who's gonna stop them"

Philz Coffee close to closing deal to sell to private equity firm for $145 million

Employee stocks will be canceled as part of the deal; former employees point to culture change across Philz Coffee.

Mission Local
@divya owned by pirate equity. No need to say anything else.

@divya

tragic and stupid...

@divya so the only thing in the Castro pride-less will be Philz. From the brilliant minds of PE.
@divya Nothing says inclusive like excluding a group. plus possibly sending the message that they're okay with a swastika flag instead.
@divya lol because this was obviously a great plan in a San Fran coffee establishment. My gods these people are stupid.
@divya A family member of mine has an acute sense of taste. He stopped going to Phillz last fall because the coffee taste changed. None of us knew that Phillz's owner changed. I thought he was being dramatic for attention, but now I'm starting to think he could have been correct.
@divya noooooooooo I don't even live there anymore but this makes me so sad
@divya
Private equity ruins everything.

@divya

Creepy weirdos are terrible at reading the room, so bad, that if they make anyone in the room feel uncomfortable, then the room itself must change.

@divya Never went, never will. Still occasionally stop at my local Peets.

@divya @quephird
> “We are working toward creating a more consistent, inclusive experience across all our stores, including removing a variety of flags and other decor. This is a change in how our stores look, not in who we are,” Sadarangani said in the statement.

That word, inclusive. It's telling a WHOLE LOT.

@divya

We want to respect peoples' individual prejudices. No women, no gays, no people of color, no gun nuts, no Klansmen...
