Reminder: Margaret Thatcher died 13 years ago on this date!

I propose to raise a toast to the devil on her behalf—a G&T, obviously. (And good riddance to bad rubbish.)

@cstross I always felt a little sorry for Lord Satan when she went there, she has probably shut half the Furnaces, sold the rest to Private enterprise and is now rationalising the Torture regimes.
God is hiding (hence the worlds problems) in case she manages to get into Heaven by a backdoor and starts making angels and saints redundant.

@aadeacon @cstross

It would not be the first time that someone is kicked out of Hell for creating a hostile workplace environment for the devils.

@cstross Can I just have the tonic in a gallon jug, I feel I should join the pilgrimage to the UK's most popular unisex bathroom on this special day and need to fill the tank. The lines are long for Thatcher's grave, but worth it.
@cstross and the best news? she's still dead!
I'd hazard a guess that you're all "V For Vendetta" fans. I should find a copy of that film.

We didn't have Thatcher in my country, but we did have Reagan. The two were different in many respects, but they shared the love of dining on poor children. In this context, they were sisters under the skin.

They lurk together in Hell now, hoping to snatch the unwary down from our plane to be torn apart in the name of trickle-down.
@oldcoder Never seen the film: read the graphic novel compilation a decade or so ago. It's very Nigel Farage. (Thatcher was on the same continuum but didn't feel enabled to show her skullface in polite company.)
@jon_ellis @cstross Yet still more demons swarmed out of the hellmouth since then.
@cstross The event is also notable for being one of the big examples of the benefits of Camel Case in hashtags: both Cher and Terri Hatcher had to deny that they had died.

@D_Perris @cstross I think they both protest too much — I’m not certain I can believe them.
@D_Perris @cstross and that's why you #PascalCaseYourHashtags (also because it makes it easier to screen readers :)
@D_Perris To be fair, Twitter users are easily confused (which is understandable, as Twitter doesn't even exist anymore) 😉 @cstross
@j_bertolotti Also the article is from 2013, so there is that ...
@D_Perris Didn't look at the date. My bad.
@cstross Everyone also note the newspaper article dates from 2013
@cstross Thanks for the reminder.
I'm off to the shops to buy tonic water (the other ingredient, of course, is well represented in my cellar)

@cstross

A real shame for humanity that she didn’t kick the bucket 40 years sooner.

@BenHM3 If Thatcher had died in 1973 it's anybody's guess where we'd be today. Possibly with someone even worse receding in our rear-view mirror: she wasn't the only neoliberal headbanger in her party back then.

@cstross @BenHM3

A more interesting question is what if Argentina hadnt done anything with the Falklands.

@Pionir @BenHM3 Or if the Junta had waited six months. The UK was about to implement the results of the Nott Defense Review which would have turned the RN into a North Atlantic convoy escort force for NATO, without the ability to project force at intercontinental range without US support. The Falklands Task Force would have been impossible to assemble by 1983, and the Argentinian invasion would have been unopposed.

@cstross @BenHM3

And would she have won the election? And what sort of path would Britain have taken if not

@Pionir @BenHM3 Before the Falklands war, Thatcher was going down in flames—popularity like Nixon during Watergate or Trump today, to give USan readers a perspective. The victory at Port Stanley gave her something like a 40% rebound in the polls, and opposition was split between the SDP/Liberal Alliance and Labour, so when she called a snap election she won it in khaki.

If Labour hadn't split in 1981, and the invasion hadn't happened OR the UK lost the war, Labour would have won.

@cstross
and then came Merkel ...........................
@cstross ding dong! The witch is dead!
@cstross When I was in Scotland last year, our tour guide (a lovely woman from Aberdeenshire) referred to Thatcher as "that horrible woman" on *multiple* occasions.
@cstross Trump could do the funniest thing today.
@cstross A different kind of damnatio memoriae. Not erased, but vilified forever.
@cstross it's a shame it could only happen once
@cstross I had already poured a nice single malt so I will raise that in a toast to the wicked witch’s demise. Good riddance!
