As an atheist and leftist, I contend that the biggest mistake early Soviets committed was the rejection of religion, particularly Christianity. They should have leaned into Jesus' radically communist message and claimed to be the fulfillment of that message. Imagine if the Catholic Church wasn't so virulently anti-communist that it sidelined itself against the Nazis. Imagine the mental gymnastics of an American population trying to fight a war against an enemy that was out-Christing them.
