Not a single American Catholic will turn away from Trump as a result of this very normal and moral statement.

@blogdiva @mausmalone Sure, but that suggests most BIPOC Catholics were already against 47. Thus, this statement probably won’t change any of 47’s supporters’ minds.
It’s still absolutely the right thing to do, especially given the RCC’s history with Nazis the first time around. Maybe it will help drive other, more-heavily-Catholic countries away from far-right politicians.
1) the Catholic community in the US has been way less supportive of 47 than evangelical protestants. According to Pew crosstabs, his approval rating is already underwater with US Catholics and has been for some time. Even when you strip it down to just WHITE Catholics, his approval rating is basically even, 52%. His religious base is overwhelmingly evangelical protestants.
2) Pope Leo has been on a tear of giving sainthood to various priests who were part of the resistance under Nazi occupation. Worth noting that the Nazis created their own parallel "official" version of the Catholic Church when they found the real RCC insufficiently fascist. Poland, as you likely know, is and was SUPER Catholic, but by the end of the war basically the entire Polish Catholic clergy was dead, about 2/3 killed in concentration camps and most of the remainder summarily executed.
I feel like the JD Vance and his ilk are trying to recreate the Nazi's controlled internal version of Catholicism. Worth noting that a not insignificant number of prominent MAGA self-proclaimed "Catholics" are actually excommunicated or appear to have never been confirmed in the first place.

@lackthereof @blogdiva Oh, I am *wildly* aware. And again, that’s why this statement probably won’t change the mind of any of 47’s supporters. I never said the majority of any demographic support him, but that the people who support him won’t be swayed by religious arguments. The arguments still need to be made for people who aren’t so personally invested.
It was terribly amusing a few years ago watching “Catholic think tanks” respond to the dismissal of some far-right bishop with “What about due process?! The pope is just an autocrat?!”
Like … yes, my dude. There’s no such thing as “due process” in a private organization. That’s the entire reason church and state should be separate!
