Diesel maths: there is a petrol station 11km from me that is selling diesel for 15c cheaper than my local - which will be $9 less for a full tank. It will take me about $6 in fuel/depreciation/maintenance to get there. To save $3. Is this worth it? #poll

@SeaFury I would say "no" because of the extra time it would take to go there and come back. If it's on your way to somewhere else then it's a good idea.
@SeaFury It is almost never worth driving out of your way to get cheaper fuel unless it’s like half the cost of the local.
However, it’s always worth getting cheaper fuel on your route you’d be travelling anyway.

@SeaFury

will you enjoy the journey?

the $3 in savings is = tax free income
so let’s call it 4

@SeaFury is half an hour of your day worth $3?
@SeaFury Save all your pennies and replace the ICE with EV. Or a walk/bike/transit lifestyle. Way cheaper and better for the planet than remaining dependent on fossil fuels
@MarkBrigham When I have pennies I will. I only use the van sparingly. Usually on my scooter πŸ‘

@SeaFury

Besides the wear-and-tear, do you have give up PII to get the discount?

@SpaceLifeForm what is PII?

@SeaFury

PII == Personally Identifying Information.

@SeaFury

Phone number and/or email.

@SpaceLifeForm No! It is just the listed cost of the fuel 😍
@SeaFury don’t forget how much time you are spending as well
@SeaFury The question to ask here is what hourly that rates your time at
@onekind Yes, THIS.
@SeaFury I personally rate it as immeasurable but sometimes you need a specific number. Mine is my consulting charge-out rate, $100/hr.
@SeaFury won’t you also have to spend $6 to get back? So you end up actually down $3?
@SeaFury if your car is particularly old you can probably run it on veg oil, but not much benefit. VO is about $3/L.
@weezmgk Hmmmm. I wonder!!!!
@SeaFury By 'old' I mean like 1970s Toyota or Nissan diesel with mechanical fuel injection. Modern common rail diesels with persnickety injectors don't like VO much. But! If you can put up with the mess, you can convert waste fryer oil into biodiesel that will run most modern diesels. It's a bunch of faffing around, tho.
@weezmgk My van is way too young for that!!

@SeaFury

It's a hefty gross discount, but time & annoyance both have values.

If you're deliverating in the area, grab some. I'm not convinced $3 net would be worth my effort to travel, however, I know I'd be annoyed by driving that "far" to save it πŸ™„
