This one takes the cake.🤷

Seems like a new scam is AI companies making infringement claims against the musicians they scraped for sounding like themselves.

Turns out it works because the claims are adjudicated by, you guessed it, AI agents.

"Because YouTube’s copyright claim system operates without individual human review of each dispute, Campbell’s channel was effectively handed over [to the AI company.]"

AI Company Clones Musician’s Voice, Then Copyright-Strikes Her Own Songs

Folk musician Murphy Campbell found herself at the center of a major ordeal when an entity called Timeless Sounds IR uploaded AI-generated imitations of her music to every major music platform, then used her recordings to strip her of her own income. According to sources, the scheme worked like this: someone fed YouTube videos of ... Read more

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet This is why AI is not a solution for everything. The big tech leaders need to know this or go out of business
@skedarwarrior @mastodonmigration @jeeynet they do know this. it is the fucking business plan.
@mastodonmigration @jeeynet This is so incredibly screwed up. Nothing is sacred to the soulless techbros.

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet I've been saying since the release of GPT-3 in 2020 that humanity should not allow #AI in any shape or form.

*shrugs*

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet Beyond parody. Utterly insane insensitivity. But the music industry is renowned for ripping off artists.

She probably should sue but who wants t9o go down that route as an individual against a business?

@NicelyManifest @mastodonmigration @jeeynet
She could dispute the claims, but the only way to do that involves doxxing yourself.
@NicelyManifest @mastodonmigration @jeeynet
Providing all of your personal information (to YouTube and the claimant), the whole truth and nothing but the truth, under pain of perjury if you get anything wrong or leave anything out.
@dec23k @mastodonmigration @jeeynet Many thanks. I am suitably informed.
@mastodonmigration @jeeynet Then musicians should move from youtube to PeerTube. https://joinpeertube.org/

@swggrkllr3rd @mastodonmigration @jeeynet Yes, needing YouTube to make a living doesn't really work that well, if you can get striped away this living at any moment.

... But on the same side PeerTube (Dev team, instance providers & community) and perhaps Fediverse in general should work on extending the possibility of making money from your content or service.

@feyter @mastodonmigration @jeeynet I get that, as long as they're NOT stealing content.

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet They put in the incentives to benefit from crime, and then act surprised that people deploy robots to take advantage of those at an industrial scale.

This artist is actually the exception. Only those with large enough audiences are.

The thieves will apologise publicly, but their bots keep scraping material even while they do so. Now they have the means to copyright claim everything, and everyone. They trust you’ll just take it.

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet Something is definitely not right here. Is there a way to handle it legally?
@MokhtarStork @mastodonmigration @jeeynet this is not new - Rick Beato has been ranting about rampant egregious copyright strike bots on YouTube for a couple of years now. When Danny Sapko, Professor of Rock and Justin Hawkins were also getting hit hard for discussing music tracks on their channels a few months ago they all got together with him to work out how to handle it. He has a lawyer looking after the dozens of strike notices he gets every day...

THE MACHINES ARE GANGING UP ON THE BIOLOGICALS!
YOU ALL LAUGHED AT ME!
I TRIED TO WARN YOU!!!!

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet

Time for Afroman's approach, and some Lemon Pound Cake!

Which is to say, publish a few catchy songs that go after the AI company, tell her story, drop an occasional f-bomb. Let them "own" those.

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet I blame Saul Zaentz. Any attempt to legally steal an artists' work, he was the start of it.

But also, #FuckAI.

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet

Oh there is also a italian company that stole like footage from Nvidia (AI footage) put it in their own video, and then coyright striked people sharing the nvidia clip, and nvidia themselves, and they managed to get Youtube to take th e nvidia video down.

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet thanks, I'm now the 24st fan of Murphy Campbell on deezer...
@mastor666 @mastodonmigration @jeeynet Heh, I just bought the album on bandcamp. It good!
@mastodonmigration We need jail time for copyright scams.
@mastodonmigration @jeeynet #AI already took the cake...now it's eating it too
@mastodonmigration I hereby renew my request to the Unicode committee for a new emoji much needed for these times, something that roughly translates to 🤦‍♂️❌💯

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet See, that's the problem:

Shit like this is why #Copyright is intrinsically linked to #Authorship (in any decent juristiction) and only humans can legally create copyrightable works!

  • I hope she'll get support and sues the offenders beyond insolvency and into #jail for this #theft!
@mastodonmigration This, in my eyes, is another reason not to use YouTube. They have questionable design patterns. YouTube stopped being the underdog a while ago. We need to diversify away from YouTube. @jeeynet
@mastodonmigration @jeeynet "That fabricated music was then distributed across platforms using a company called Vydia. Vydia then proceeded to file copyright claims against the original source videos on Campbell’s own YouTube channel " #NameAndShame

@jeeynet @mastodonmigration

The entire copyright system built over the last several decades is inherently oppressive and extractive, assuming guilt and requiring people to challenge an prove their innocence. As someone who is most likely to post my own students and ensembles playing I get copy strikes all the time and have for years, on public domain works because the system is built around the premise that the first person to register a performance own the work.

@mastodonmigration @jeeynet ai is the biggest thief and scam on the planet
