Hey, #US public announcement: #Tax filing is almost upon us. If you are mailing dead trees to the #IRS, Thursday the 9th is your last day to drop it in the postal box and have it delivered in time, according to the Postal Service. (#USPS)

If mailing after the 9th, you need to go to the post office, and go to a clerk and have it manually postmarked, so as to avoid kerfuffle and fines in the future.

@MissConstrue a small edit to this excellent advice: the Post Office has changed how they apply postmarks. It is not when you hand the mail to the clerk, but when the item enters the mail handling system. Yes, this does affect vote-by-mail. DMM Revision: Postmarks and Postal Possession

@Jjchr Yeah, it's crazy making. I had a postal employee, (a neighbor) tell me the trick of going to a clerk and getting them to manually postmark it for you while you watch.
@MissConstrue yeah, and that depends on where you live. In my area, they refuse to do it: they just say something to the effect of 'postmarks are applied by the sorting machines' and chuck the item in the bin. I guess one way to get around that is to pony up the bucks for certified....
