That would make the vice president the acting president unless the president issues a statement afterwards that he is competent, at which point the powers return to the president.

Trump is useful to the regime. They need his destructive chaos — his "bull in a china shop" ways — to destroy as much of the Constitution and the rule of law in America as possible. They can't establish a nazi regime overnight and if they had to try to do it right now they may still fail. Vance and co probably couldn't really properly establish the nazi regime they want at this time.

Vance is absolutely 100% fascist. He will continue to be a nazi, but he doesn't have the bull in a china shop, barge in and smash everything ways that Trump has. That is what every single power is unable to handle and what allows them to actually openly break the Constitution so extremely and visibly without consequence.
If enough damage is done by the time he takes over, we're still doomed. But I don't think he can cross the finish line yet.

It's not impossible that a big enough public outcry could force even this administration to act. Possibly. It's also not impossible that we could still manage to just barely eke out a last bit of democracy and turn things around in November.
But it is not healthy to just assume it will just work out.

Not sure I can decode this. But the idea " avoiding open conflicts with nero might make the repairs easier later?" sounds to my German ears like "avoiding open conflict with Hitler would have made repairs easier later". Sorry for the comparison --- I don't want to activate Godwin's law here. But using Hitler as one extreme point in the space of possible comparisons makes clear that there must be some kind of boundary beyond which the "avoid conflict" approach won't work.
The only question: Where in relationship to this boundary does the regime of Nero lie? Likely not an easy question...

So the least, world leaders should do, is not to accept meekly any garbage accusation ("they don't participate in my war of aggression, they aren't really allies") but instead reply with a polite but firm reprimand on official, diplomatic channels: "The leader of the US, does ... This is (a) not true and (b) not how NATO works, see articles N to K of the charter. We are disappointed and would have expected more respect".
