i still refuses cookies and don't have any LLM or AI installed on my desktop. I just used grep and find commends to find files. You don't need this tech bro bullshit on your personal machines.
@nixCraft I'm just facinated at my friend who used to go on and on and on about how various browsers were insecure because you could write scripts that might go into memory spaces of other pages or frames, etc... Same guy: --bypass-permissions!! Here's the creds to all my client's servers.
@nixCraft Luckily we are part of a silent, but proud group of folks who still enjoy using classic GNU/Linux tools. Me, 40M, I've been a loyal Debian user since 2006 and they'll have to pry it from my dead cold hands if they want to take it away 😆
@nixCraft
I have my files organised in directories (AKA Folders). Like a well organised office.
Sometimes I need to use search tools, but rarely.
I always disabled Indexing on Windows NT (XP to Win10). Never needed it.
I still have most files created since 1992.
@raymaccarthy @nixCraft I organize my files in directories even on my phone. I will always think it's the logical way to organize files
@nixCraft There is a reason I fully switched to Linux waaaay over a year ago, because this is the kind of shit where is where even as tech enthusiast say NO STOP and if Fedora ever dares adding any ÁÍ💩 bullshit I will instantly yeet it off my system or outright switch the distro.
@nixCraft why are we comparing two evils like this?
@Imgoneinpeace @nixCraft Because people think they can make a point by a false relationship.
@nixCraft Clearly, I don't think it's the same people.
@nixCraft haha good one :D
@nixCraft the best way to deal with consent banners is removing them and not even choosing disagree (if that option even exists). I just wish ublock origin would hep better in that blocking process.
@nixCraft who the f gives access to bank accounts?
@nixCraft "sudo AI Agent remove those nasty cookies from my system"
@nixCraft not by choice I can assure you.
@nixCraft I don't have so much files anyway. Everything I need I know exactly where it is and what it contains.
@nixCraft I am not sure which generation this refers to. I refuse cookies and AI.
@nixCraft I'm not WILLINGLY giving it that access, it's just that all the third party services I'm forced to rely on for things like email and banking are giving it access to my data without my consent now.
@nixCraft I don't have pc 💻 so no worries 😅

@nixCraft

I'm not against #AI but we must ensure that AI is developed in a way that reflects the needs and values of society as a whole: https://www.sciencenewstoday.org/the-ethics-of-ai-how-we-can-build-a-better-future-together

So, I'm against #ChatGPT #MicrosoftCopilot and the least worst option is #Anthropic (https://apnews.com/article/anthropic-pentagon-ai-hegseth-dario-amodei-b72d1894bc842d9acf026df3867bee8a) but I think the best option moving forward is #opensource and I think #MistralAI is a good candidate?

The Ethics of AI: How We Can Build a Better Future Together

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the most transformative forces in modern society. It’s reshaping industries, revolutionizing the way we ...

@Whinery You're not going to stop AI, you're right - GPT-OSS is pretty good...
@Whinery @nixCraft our needs or the needs of a capitalist system in an infinite pursue of growth with unnecessary speed?
@nixCraft I deny cookies, I'm using AI moderately but from me it doesn't even know my name. Nope, it is all remote.
@nixCraft Sometimes I have an AI program running on my desktop, but there's a catch: (a) it runs in a Docker container, both for ease of installation and so it can't see my files, (b) it just does grammar checks and no more, (c) I wrote some software that feeds it text from LaTex file s(pruning out things like coding examples) and parses the results, turning them into compiler-like error messages so any changes to documents are made by me manually.
@nixCraft My desktop (Mac running bootcamp because Apple destroyed disability access for low vision) runs an automatic “kill copilot” program on EVERY bootup and I have an exe program on my desktop to run if I think Microsoft has been too aggressive re trying to “reconfigure” Office2010. I’ve removed all AI, repeatedly, whenever I realise it’s running. And I try to block companies from installing it but eg Apple overrides my refusals of “updates” and I HATE IT.
@nixCraft I do enjoy running LLMs on my Linux machine using GPT4All and Diffusion type image generators with ComfyUI. Models I can download for free, models for which I can train LoRAs for additional capabilities and use LoRAs made by others.
I don't use those LLMs for anything productive, and I don't let them access anything. And I use those image generators mostly with very vague prompts that give me wildly unpredictable images because when I know exactly what I want in my picture, I just paint it with Gimp and/or Krita or make it as pixel art in Cosmigo ProMotion or pyDPainter or Grafx2, or maybe do it the old-fashioned way with pencils and/or acrylic paint.
